Arlene Anne Woolslayer Obituary

Arlene Anne Woolslayer, a long-time San Francisco Bay Area native and relatively recent retiree to Humboldt County, CA, passed away on January 26, 2016 at the age of 79. Born in 1936, Arlene was raised in the "Mother Lode" country of San Andreas, Angels Camp, CA.

In 1956, Arlene married Lawrence "Larry" Woolslayer, also a Bay Area native, and together they had two sons, Michael and Matthew. The family spent time every summer vacationing in Benbow, California and enjoyed fishing and camping along the near-by Eel River. In later years, Arlene and Larry continued to visit Humboldt County, where they upgraded from tent camping to cabin camping, and spent less time fishing and more time golfing and wine tasting, their favorite destinations being the Benbow and Eureka Muni golf courses, the Sea Grill restaurant, and the Briceland Winery.

In 2010, Arlene and Larry decided to move out of the heat of the Central Valley, to the milder climate of Eureka to enjoy their final years in their favorite vacation destination. Eventually they moved from their home in Eureka to Alder Bay Assisted Living, and then on to Timber Ridge Assisted Living and Memory Care in McKinleyville.

After raising her children, Arlene worked for a period of time as a business manager and bookkeeper for a small Bay Area construction firm. When not raising children in her younger years, or golfing and wine tasting in later years, Arlene also enjoyed gardening and cooking.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel and Eleanor Henke; son Matthew Woolslayer; brother-in-law, Jerry Bearden; and nephew Craig Bearden. She is survived by her son Michael Woolslayer; sister-in-law Connie Sue Bearden of Granite Bay, CA; and niece Lynn Charton and her family of San Rafael, CA.

A warm and special thank you is extended to the wonderful staffs at Eureka Rehabilitation & Wellness Center; Alder Bay Assisted Living; Timber Ridge Assisted Living & Renaissance Memory Care of McKinleyville; Mad River Home Health; and Hospice of Humboldt for their exceptional and compassionate care of Arlene. A special thank you to Linda Willcut-Tallman, RN/Geriatric Care Manager, for joining the care team toward the end to help ensure Arlene was as comfortable as possible, and to Betty Jean McGinty, for being with Arlene in her final hours.

Arlene did not wish for a service, and would ask that any donations be made to a favorite local charity.
