Claud Eugene Evans Obituary

Claud Evans, 71, passed away December 26, 2014 at Vibra Hospital in Redding, CA.

Claud was born June 11, 1943 in Portland, OR to Clyde and Gladys Evans. By the age of five, the family lived in Alturas, CA and Claud attended the local schools, graduating from Modoc High School in 1961. Following graduation, he attended Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo for one year and then transferred to Shasta Junior College in Redding, earning an AA degree. He continued his schooling at Chico State College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History, in 1968.

While at Chico State, Claud met his future wife, Gay Huffman, (from Colusa, CA) in 1965. They were married in 1968. Claud worked at various jobs in the Chico area until he found his calling and hired on with the California Department of Forestry (CDF – now called Cal-Fire) as a fireman in 1972. His first assignment was to the Biggs station, but he transferred to the Durham station within three months. Claud and Gay moved to Durham at that time.

Claud worked at various stations in Butte County and retired from Cal-Fire as a Heavy Fire Equipment Operator in August 2000. He was also a charter member of the North Chico Volunteer Fire Department and transferred to the Durham Volunteers after moving to Durham, serving a total of 34 years as a volunteer. He was also a long-time member of the Chico Rod and Gun Club and the NRA.

After retirement, Claud started his own business driving a pilot car, moving mobile homes all over California, until he was forced to retire again due to illness in 2011. Claud loved his work, volunteering, hunting in Modoc County, target shooting, reading anything related to history, and getting together with family and friends.

Claud was preceded in death by his parents and an infant granddaughter, Marlee Evans.

He is survived by his wife, Gay; his son, Scott (Kimberlee); and granddaughter, McKinlee of Nevada City; and his son, Brian (Shannon); and grandson, Ryder of Paradise. He is also survived by his sister, Janice Evans of Santa Rosa; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Glenn and Chris Huffman; and his nephews, Matthew and Kevin Huffman, all from Colusa; and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tom and Jan Conway of Princeton, CA.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2015, at the Memorial Hall in Durham. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Durham Volunteer Fire Department, the Durham Community Foundation, the Chico Rod and Gun Club or a .
