Donald G. Fredell Obituary
Donald G. Fredell
Donald G. Fredell, 74, of Marysville, CA, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2015. Don was born in Fullerton, CA to Giles Peter and Beatrice Ivey Fredell in 1940. Don and his older sister Gloria lived in Fullerton and Brea (Southern CA) until 1946 when they moved to their precious sprawling ranch in Cottonwood, CA. Don attended a one room schoolhouse near the ranch until his parents moved the family to the small town of Red Bluff, CA. The move enabled brother and sister to participate more fully in school activities.

During high school at RBHS, Don proved to be an outstanding athlete, particularly in baseball and his life long passion, football. After high school Don attended Shasta College and played football there. During that time he met Diane Watson and they married on December 9, 1960. They lived in Red Bluff where Don worked in the wholesale meat industry. Don and Diane started their family with the birth of Kelly Rae in 1961. They later moved to Oroville where Don continued to work in wholesale meat. While there, their son Matthew was born. The third move occurred in 1963 when the couple moved their family to a home in Marysville. Second daughter Kimberely Dawn was born in 1967.

Don worked two and three jobs to support his growing family. He left Del Pero to begin his career in retail meat sales. He worked as a meat cutter and later served as meat department manager for Lucky's stores in Yuba City, Marysville, Oroville and Grass Valley as well as Gemco. He was highly thought of by his colleagues and served the companies of Lucky's and later Albertson's for 27 years. He worked a total of 37 years in the industry.

The family was very active, enjoying boating, camping, and outdoor sports. When son Matthew was old enough Don enrolled him in ice hockey and became a coach himself. Father and son spent many great hours involved with the sport.

In 1968 Don became a member of the Marysville Elks Lodge. He was an active member whenever he could, and some years were particularly busy. As well as participating in Elk programs, Don became a member of the Yuba College Football Boosters club and remained active through the eighties. Don served as President of the Booster's club for ten years and earned much needed funds for the teams.

During these same decades Don added volunteer firefighter to his resume. He was passionate about that part of his life, as he was about all his endeavors. Don retired as a training captain after 25 years.

Sadly, Don and Diane divorced in 1982 and went their separate ways. Later Don met and married Carol (Penny) McGee in 1983. They now had 5 children together, combining Penny's two (daughter Rebecca Lynn and son Sean Fox) with Don's three. The new family spent busy years involved in sports and other activities.

The births of grandchildren began in 1985 with first born Joshua Jackson.

In 1990, Don was elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Marysville Elks Lodge. He skillfully led the board in their respective duties. Later in the decade Don decided to follow in his father's footsteps and he became a Master Mason, and later the Master of Enterprise Lodge in Yuba City. His one year in that role is still remembered for its excellence.

During the same decade Don and Penny traveled to Mexico and fell in love with a beach front parcel of land. They built a beautiful home on the Sea of Cortez where they entertained family, friends and neighbors.

Don continued his Masonic membership by becoming a Shriner and once again, joining Shrine clubs and actively participating. Even during these last months of his life, Don created a program (with the help of others of course) to promote the growth of Masonry and Shrinedom in our community. His last official Shrine duty was to serve, with wife Penny, as personal aides to Jeff and Joanie Davidson, Potentate of Sacramento Ben Ali Shrine. Don Fredell was a big man with big ideas. He will be greatly missed as a positive force in our lives.

Don is survived by his wife Carol Penny Fredell of Marysville; sister Gloria Fredell Stryker (Ray) of Paradise; sisters in-law Linda Lauder (Eric) of Foresthill and Margaret Patricia Fox of Los Angeles; children Kelly Fredell Rice (Curtis) of MN, Matthew Fredell (Cheri) of Sparks, NV Kimberly Fredell Bailor (Jess) of Sparks, NV, Rebecca Lynn McGee Morris (Emil) of Sparks, NV, Sean McGee (Tamara) of Auburn; grandchildren Joshua Jackson of Sacramento, Alyssa Coffee (Wade) of Grass Valley, Tiffany Munoz (Jony) of Reno, NV, Halee Koch of Lake Tahoe, Harley Koch of Grass Valley, Meyani Morris of Sparks, NV, Jocelyn Fredell of Eureka, CA, Matti Fredell of Sparks, NV, Emil Jr. Morris of Sparks, NV Tristan Rice of MN and Tymon Dozier of Sparks, NV; great grandchildren Jaemen Munoz of Reno and Piper Hodges of Grass Valley.
