Florence Carrie Currie Obituary

March 29, 1927 - January 15, 2015

Florence Carrie Currie was born Florence Carrie Kellington on March 29, 1927 in Naicom, Saskatchewan, Canada. She was the second of seven children and oldest daughter born to Clifford and Esther Kellington. As she was growing up on the farm, she spent many hours caring for her three brothers and three sisters. This time with her siblings was one of Florence's most cherished memories.

As a young girl, her family moved to Red Deer, Alberta, where she would remain until after her marriage. Florence left Red Deer for a time to attend the University of Alberta in Edmonton. She was the first of her siblings to seek higher education and she placed great value on her hard won diploma. On July 12, 1947, Florence married Glenn O. Currie of Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. As a couple they immigrated to the United States in September of 1952.

After arriving in Sacramento, California, Florence enrolled in the California State University at Sacramento to complete her Masters Degree in education. After completion, she began her long and successful career as an elementary school teacher. Florence was especially pleased when teaching young children to read. She followed her career path while moving from Sacramento to Anaheim until her retirement in 1981. At that time, Florence and her husband, Glenn, returned to northern California to be closer to their grandchildren.

Florence is survived by her daughters, Marion Mathis (Glenn) of Maxwell, and Kim Wasserman (Mike) of Los Gatos; her grandchildren, D.J. Mathis of Maxwell, Jared Mathis (Kate) of Laguna Hills, Wade Mathis (Katie) of Maxwell, Nicole Wasserman of San Jose, and Sean Wasserman of San Francisco; and her great-grandchildren, Trent and Mallory Mathis of Maxwell, Charlotte, Amelia, and Sophie Mathis of Laguna Hills, and Evan, Avery and Drew Mathis of Maxwell. Florence was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn O. Currie, and all her siblings.

The funeral service for Florence will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 25, 2015, at the Newton-Bracewell Funeral Home in Chico, California.
