Fred Matsui Obituary

Fred Matsui, age 83, of Yuba City, CA, peacefully passed away on December 19, 2014. He was a resident of Yuba Sutter for 76 years.

He lived 7 of his childhood years attending school in Japan. During his time in Japan WWII broke out and Fred witnessed the atomic bomb drop over Nagasaki, he was 14 at the time. Fred moved back to the US shortly after the war ended and finished his education in Yuba City.

Fred is a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the US Marine Corps. He fought and served as a Field Radio Operator and a Forward Observer for the 4.2 Mortar Co. In 1961 Fred started his career with the CA State Division of Highways now called Caltrans. He began as a Draftsman and retired as a Landscape Architect with 34 years of service. After retirement he was a self-employed landscape contractor doing residential landscape design and installation.

Survivors include wife Jean of 49 years; two children Jason, wife Erin and Joyce, husband Jack Kenna; three grandsons; one granddaughter, and sister Mary Ishibashi.

Fred was a board member for the Marysville Buddhist Church for 25 years. He was a member of the Japanese American Citizens League and the American Bosai Association of Sacramento. Fred had a great sense of humor and was a wonderful generous man. He will be dearly missed.

Family and Friends are invited to attend his memorial service at 1:00 pm, Saturday, December 27, 2014, at the Marysville Buddhist Church, 125 B Street, Marysville, CA.
