1930 - 2017 Obituary Condolences
Frederick Wulling (Fred) Herbert Jr. Obituary

Frederick (Fred) Wulling Herbert, Jr. passed away after a short illness on February 15, 2017 at his son's home in Sutter surrounded by his family. He was born on February 21, 1930 in Shafter, CA to Frederick Wulling Herbert, Sr. and Margaret (Starck) Herbert.

He started school in Shafter but the family soon moved to the Berkeley Hills where he attended grade school, junior high and Berkeley High School. While attending high school, he worked at the Tilden Park Golf Course which cultivated his life-long love of golf. He was a very proud alumni of Cal Berkeley (go Bears!) where he started work on his Master's degree. He was drafted to the U.S. Army in 1953 and was a member of the Signal Corp. Most of his assignment was with White House Communications under President Dwight D. Eisenhower who he would tell you he met quite a few times but never got to shake his hand. While stationed in Washington D.C., he met the love of his life Jane on a blind date and married her in her hometown of Winchester, Virginia on September 7, 1957. After they were married, they moved across the U.S. to Oregon for a job with an extension of the U.C. Davis Ag Department where he worked on the soils testing for crops of hops. He also attended the University of Oregon to complete his Master's degree. Both Sharon and Brian were born in Oregon.

His work with U.C. Davis is what brought the family to Marysville in 1964. While working for U.C. Davis, he was instrumental in completing the soil survey of Yuba and Sutter Counties. He moved on from this assignment and worked for Ag Advisors in the Yuba Sutter area where he assisted local farmers on the best applications of herbicides/pesticides of their local tomato crops. His last career was with Sutter County Superintendent of Schools office as the Audio Technician for 25+ years.

Fred enjoyed many hobbies, which included golf, remote control airplanes, N scale model trains, restoring antique radios and collecting antique watches. He was an avid reader and seeker of knowledge on many subjects and loved to camp and travel.

He was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Jane (Southard) Herbert, his parents, his sister Janet (Herbert) Roberts, and a niece Linda Crabb.

He is survived by his daughter, Sharon Weldon (Clay), and grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Clint (Carley) and Chase Weldon, Cory Weldon, Colby (Ashley) and Brylee Weldon; his son, Brian Herbert (Donna) and grandchildren, Justin Herbert (Katelynn Bradford), Jared Herbert and Joshua Herbert, Janae Clark and Kyle Richardson. He is also survived by his nieces Carol (Carl) Perry, and Patricia Smith and a nephew Geoff (Gloria) Roberts and his companion, Dee Jagerhorn.

Family has decided not to hold his Celebration of Life until after the area is out of harm's way (Dad would not want anyone to have to swim to his life's celebration). Arrangements are being made for a future date and will be announced both in the Appeal-Democrat, on social media and with phone calls.

In lieu of flowers, family requests that donations be made in his name to Sutter North Hospice or .
