Harry James Werner Obituary

Harry James Werner, age 93, of Yuba City, CA, passed away January 11, 2016 at Rideout Hospital in Marysville. Born February 15, 1922 in Sterling, Colorado, of August and Margaret Schott Werner. Harry was a Yuba-Sutter resident for 65 years.

Survivors include daughters: Margaret Fedora (Sib) and Maureen Hilling; sons: Mark Werner (Harriett) and Michael Werner (Cheryl); seven grandchildren: Brian Fedora (Susan), Chris Fedora (Tamsin), Derek Werner (Chiu Yen), Melissa Werner-Revenaugh (Jeffrey), Adam Werner, Aaron Werner and Andre Hilling; seven great-grandchildren: Andrew, Isabela, Marissa, Madeline, Owen, Jace, and Liesel.

Harry grew up in Sterling, Colorado. He attended and graduated from Hillrose High School in Hillrose, Colorado. He then attended Sterling Junior College until he joined the United States Army during World War II. He served at Attu in the Aleutian Islands for two years as a Tech-Sergeant in the Engineer Combat Corps. He then attended Officer's Candidate School in Texas and was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. Harry served as Medical Administrative Officer in the Medical Administrative Corp for a year at DeWitt General Hospital in Auburn, California, and as Personal Affairs Officer at Birmingham General Hospital in Van Nuys, California. Harry was honorably discharged in 1946. While stationed in Auburn, Harry met Lieutenant Pauline Jones, a nurse also in the United States Army. They became engaged and were married in Sterling, Colorado, in June of 1946.

Upon his discharge from the army, Harry attended Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. He graduated from college in 1949 as a Civil Engineer. Harry worked for the United States Bureau of Reclamation on the Big Thompson Project; which brought irrigation water via dams, tunnels, and canals from the western slope of the Rocky Mountains to the eastern slope. He then went to work for G.L. Tarleton Construction Company on various projects; including tunnels for the Horsetooth Reservoir Distribution System in Colorado and on construction of Jenkinson Reservoir for El Dorado Irrigation District. Harry then joined Rice Brothers Construction Company in Marysville in 1953. Rice Brothers became Baldwin Contracting Company in 1954. Starting as an engineer-estimator, Harry eventually became President of Baldwin Contracting Company in 1982. Various large projects the company built during Harry's tenure, and of which he was proud, included Consumnes River College, Rocketdyne test stands in Reno, Mather Air Force Base Hospital, Music-Drama Building at Calif. State University - Chico, American River Junior College, the original terminals at Sacramento Metropolitan Airport, California State Fair Building, and Water Treatment Plants at Clear Lake and other locations. Harry retired from Baldwin Contracting Company in 1986.

Harry was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Marysville for 65 years. He participated in church activities, served as usher, and worked on various committees, including the building committee to build the new church in 1973-74. Harry served as an adult leader of a Yuba City Boy Scout Troop, and supported activities of his children in Boy Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, 4H, and school bands. Upon his retirement, Harry and Pauline took several trips to Canada, Alaska, Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii. They purchased a second home in Graeagle, California, and spent many happy summers there, being frequently visited by their children, grandchildren, and other relatives. Harry enjoyed boat fishing the numerous lakes in the Graeagle, Sierra Buttes, Gold Lake, and Lake Davis areas. He also enjoyed day hikes in the area. Harry and Pauline remained happily married for 65 years, until Pauline's death in 2011.

A family-only Memorial Service and inurnment was held at Sutter Cemetery on Saturday, January 16, 2016, with Pastor Bernie Fricke officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Ullrey Memorial Chapel. Donations may be made in Harry Werner's name to the .
