Jean (Reische) DeMattos Obituary

June 27, 1920 - April 21, 2016

Jean R. DeMattos, 95, died peacefully in her home on April 21, 2016 in Folsom, California. Jean was a gentle, loving soul who will be remembered for her devotion to her family and service to others.

She is survived by her children Norman DeMattos of Las Vegas, NV and Carolyn Goodby of Folsom, CA; siblings Farrell Reische and Carol Ray Trexler; grandchildren Tara and Jeff (Norm), Teresa and John (Carolyn); and her great-grandchildren Ryan, Liam, Karyessa, and Juliette. She is predeceased by her siblings Ann, Voriece, and Susan.

Jean began life in Meridian, CA as the eldest of six children born to Chester and Eleanor Reische. In 1938, Jean met John DeMattos and the two were married on March 19, 1940. She often spoke of how she and John scraped together the five dollars for her wedding ring. Jean cherished that ring and their life together for sixty years until John's death in December, 2000.

In addition to being a wife and mother, Jean had a strong belief in the education of children. After graduating from Sutter High School in 1936, Jean received a scholarship to UC Berkeley and later transferred to Chico State where she graduated with a degree in Elementary Education. In 1945, Jean began her long career as an educator in Meridian, CA, teaching 2nd through 5th grades in one classroom where many of her students were her cousins. From 1948 to 1977, she taught and was a school Principal in Sacramento and Modesto school districts. During that time, Jean furthered her education by receiving her Master's Degree in Education from Sacramento State. In 1977, Jean worked as a negotiator in SCUSD and in 1978 became the Executive Director for SCUSD administration until her retirement in 1986. Jean also served as an active member and executive officer of the California Teachers Association, CRTA, Delta Kappa Gamma, PDK, ACE, and ACDA. She was an active member of the Odd Fellows Rebekah Lodge for 75 years.

Jean loved to play bridge, read, and sew. She lived a rich and fulfilling life. She left us with love, joy, and warm wonderful memories.

Per Jean's wishes, service will be provided by the Rebekah Lodge. She will be interred at the Meridian Cemetery on May 9, 2016 at 12:00 noon in Meridian, CA. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to a .
