John Romo Obituary

John Romo passed away on April 10, 2017, at home peacefully in his sleep.

He was born in Los Angeles on July 3, 1924, and came to the Yuba City area in 1942. John started out working as a farm laborer, then taught himself television repair. He then worked with the U.S. Post Office as a mailman. He later worked for the California Employment Development Department, where he stayed for the next 20 years until he retired.

Traveling was one of his great loves. He started out by riding the rails by catching rides on boxcars, and saw a lot of the country. At one time he marched in the labor marches with Cesar Chavez. He traveled across the United States, Europe, Mexico and Central America. After retirement he spent his winters in camping along the canals of the southwestern U.S.

He was a renaissance man. There wasn't a thing he couldn't fix, or at least tell you how to fix it. His talents were many. His greatest joy was being with his family and friends. He has five children: John, Gloria James, Cecilia and David Alvarez. He kept young hanging with his grandchildren and his many nieces and nephews. He was known as Uncle Johnny to many, family or not.

John was later fortunate to meet his soulmate, Rebecca. Camping, fishing, playing cards, and lots of story telling filled their days.

A rosary will be held at Ullrey Memorial Chapel on April 18, 2017 at 6:00 pm, and graveside services at Sutter Cemetery at 10:00 am, April 19, 2017.
