Karyl Kay Cross Hanes Obituary

Karyl Kay Cross Hanes, 78, died peacefully on July 9, 2015 at home in Yuba City, CA with her son by her side. Kay was born on July 24, 1936 in Rapid City, South Dakota to Charles Marion Cross and Lois Binkley Cross. Her family moved to California soon after, settling in Yuba City in 1937. Kay attended Bridge Street Grammar School and Yuba City High School, graduating in 1954. She immediately went to work for the Teamsters Local 137 and managed the Marysville office for 44 years.

Kay was an accomplished piano player in her teens and a life-long animal lover, especially cats. She had a passion for football, having spent hours watching it with her dad when she was young. She was a kind-hearted person with a sharp memory and a caring interest in others. She was a loving mother to her son, Matt, and a loyal caregiver to her aging mother for many years.

Kay is survived by her son, Matthew Myers and his fiancé' Maureen Givans and Maureen's sister Melissa Murphy of Yuba City; her grandson, Bradley Myers; her sister, Donna Diederichs of Sacramento, and brother Ken Cross (Sharron Noone) of Portland, OR; stepchildren Jackie Dollins (Randy), Diane Cressey, and Mark Hanes (Pam), as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, step grand- and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years (11 days short of 50), Marvin Hanes; her parents, Charlie and Lois Cross; and her sister, Marjorie Cross Wisner.

A graveside service is scheduled for July 24, 2015 at 12:00 noon at the Sutter Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Ullrey Memorial Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Yuba Sutter SPCA, 745 Sutter St. Yuba City, CA 95991.
