Morrel Lowe Darrough Obituary

Morrel Lowe Darrough died peacefully in his home on January 9, 2017, the way he wanted. He was born in 1924 in Chillicothe, MO to Fred and Josie Darrough. He grew up in Algiers, LA, eventually working for Todd-Johnson Dry Docks in New Orleans. He left the shipyard to join the US Navy serving 3 years in the Asiatic Pacific, American, and European African Theaters aboard the USS West Point during World War II. He was proud of his military service and especially enjoyed participating in the Marysville Veteran's Day Parade.

After his service, Morrel's uncle, W.H. Darrough, convinced him to move to CA to start his career in heavy construction. He joined Operating Engineers Local 3 in 1951 and was very proud of the fact that he received his 65 year pin. He quickly learned to operate all forms of heavy construction equipment, eventually working his way up to Project Superintendent. He worked on the Trans-Alaska Pipeline where often a helicopter was used to get him in to the various job sites. Another job took him to AZ to work in the Spook Hill Flood Control Dam in Mesa, AZ. Other jobs, include Bullards Bar Dam, Little Grass Valley Dam, Hidden Valley Dam and many roadways throughout CA.

Morrel met and married Bettie Mae Luttrell in January 1951. They moved to Sutter, CA and raised three children. Morrel donated his time, expertise, motor grader and water truck while breaking ground for the construction of the new Sutter Community Swimming Pool.

He is survived by his sister Jackie Darrough McBride; daughter Kathy Reilly (Pat) and son Don Darrough. Grandkids, Patrick Reilly (Jennifer), Micah Crockett (Ryan) and Dawn Darrough, great grandkids, Andi and Trevor Reilly and Wyatt and Dylan Crockett.

Morrel rests in peace and is reunited with his parents, his wife Bettie and his daughter Brenda.

Graveside services will be held Friday, January 13, 2017 at 11:00 am at Sutter Cemetery with David Kugelman officiating. Under the direction of Ullrey Memorial Service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that all donations be made to our local "Wreaths Across America" and mailed to Yuba Sutter Veterans Stand Down, 604 D Street, Marysville, CA 95901.
