Nell Harwood Holmes Obituary

Our dear mother, grand-mother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, Nell Edith Harwood Holmes passed away December 1, 2017, at the age of 95.

Nell was born in Marble Falls, TX, on December 17, 1921, to Nell Edith Harwood Mooney and Charles Gerald Harwood. She was married to Robert on October 15, 1939, at the South Bluff Methodist Church. During Robert's absence for World War II, she cared for her three children Nell Elaine, Diane and Susan.

Upon Robert's return, Robert Junior was born and the growing family moved to Winters, CA, so Robert Senior could attend UC Davis where he graduated in 1948, with a degree in Agricultural Science. Daughter Louisa was born that same year. Nell and Robert finally moved to Redding, CA, where Kathy, Elizabeth, Daniel and Nancy were born. Mom was a devoted and loving mother to her children and made so many sacrifices so that each of us could be successful in life.

Nell got her Bachelor degree from Chico State in 1965. After student teaching and award of her lifetime credential the family moved to Yuba City for her first teaching position at Lone Tree Elementary School on Beale Air Force Base, California. Her twenty year teaching career culminated in her last teaching assignment at Franklin Elementary School where she taught kindergarten through fifth grade for over twelve years. Robert and Nell were members of the St. Andrew Presbyterian Church for several years where she sang in the choir and baked lemon meringue pies for the church men's group.

Nell lived at the Fountains Skilled Nursing Facility in Yuba City for four years. She passed away peacefully surrounded by many of her children. The family is eternally grateful for the loving care provided by the Fountains staff.

She is survived by children, Nell Elaine Chandler; Susan Carol Jones; Robert Stokely Holmes, Jr.; Louisa Edith Schmidl; Mary Kathleen Donneson; Elizabeth Ann Cooper; Daniel John William Holmes; and Nancy Lucile Geiger.

She is preceded in death by husband Robert Stokely Holmes Senior; daughter Martha Diane Jessee; son-in-law John T. Jessee; and grandson Jeffrey Allen Walker. In addition to her children, she is survived by 22 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, with another on the way, 1 great-great-grandchild and 8 sons and daughters-in-law, 12 grandsons and granddaughters-in-law and one great-grandson-in-law.

A celebration of her life will be held January 6, 2018, at 11:00 am at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, 1390 Franklin Road, Yuba City, California, Reverend Hayes Noble officiating. A light lunch to follow.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, Mother Hubbard's Cupboard, and Hands of Hope.

This mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother took with her to eternal life the credentials which all can choose – loving kindness and love of our Lord.
