There, he met and married Ruby Locken. After the war, he raised and trained race horses with his father, Charles, and brother, Tom. He attended college in Moorhead, MN graduating in two years and nine months with a teaching credential in History and Physical Education. He especially enjoyed trips to Lake Bronson, MN and traveled the world with his second wife, Linnie Baker.

Robert was a serious gardener growing numerous flowers and very large amounts of vegetables. He was very proud of his gladiola garden. Robert continued with his love of horse racing until his death. He would check the racing results daily in the paper; looking to see how his favorite jockey, Russell Baze, had done.
