He grew up on the family's sweet potato farm in Atwater where he learned the value of hard work at an early age. Upon completing High School he went to St. Mary's College where he earned a Bachelor's of Science degree. He served during the Korean War and after several base assignments, returned home to California finishing his career at Beale A.F.B. While at Beale, Russell was in the B-52 program and later planned flight missions for the SR-71.
