Subedar Jagrup Singh Atwal Obituary

Subedar Jagrup Singh Atwal, 92, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2017 surrounded by his loving family.

Jagrup Singh Atwal was born on October 24, 1924 in Dosanjh, Punjab, India to Beant Kaur and Phuman Singh Atwal. Jagrup Singh joined the Indian Army at age 15 and married Gurnam Kaur at the age of 18. The eldest of three children Jagrup Singh Atwal stepped up to take care of his younger siblings when he lost his father just two months after getting married. Jagrup Singh Atwal was posted in many different cities across India including Jalandhar and Jabalpur. Jagrup Singh Atwal migrated to the United States in 1971 with his wife and three children, settling down in Yuba city.

Jagrup Singh began working hard in the agricultural fields of Yuba City but always felt a pull towards work that helped others. Jagrup Singh Atwal began working in the unemployment office which allowed him to quickly blossom into a pivotal member of the Punjabi Sikh Community in Yuba City. Jagrup Singh Atwal spent much of his free time serving his community through his work at the Tierra Buena Gurdwara which included planning and executing the yearly Nagar Kirtan ceremonies, coaching sports teams, teaching Punjabi, mentoring youth, and by being a liaison between the Punjabi Sikh community and other communities. Even in retirement Jagrup Singh Atwal started a very successful Punjabi school at his home, encouraging the youth of today to embrace the Punjabi language and learn about the fundamentals of the Sikh religion.

Jagrup Singh Atwal will be remembered for his loving compassion for others, his charisma, his positive outlook in life, his preservation of history and his selflessness, dedication and passion to give back to his community. The passing of Jagrup Singh Atwal is not only an incredible loss for his family but also for the Punjabi Sikh community.

Jagrup Singh Atwal was preceded in death by his younger son Rajinder Singh Atwal, brother Harbhajan Singh Atwal and sister Gurmeet Kaur Sahota.

Jagrup Singh Atwal is survived by his loving wife of 73 years Gurnam Kaur Atwal, his children Narinder Singh Atwal and his wife Davinder Kaur Atwal, Manmohan Kaur Mann and her husband Joginderpal Mann, and his daughter-in-law Tejinder Kaur Thiara and her husband Karanvir Singh Thiara, his grandchildren Preet Kaur Sabharwal and her husband Sharad Sabharwal, Suman Kaur Atwal, Amrit Singh Atwal, and Kern Singh Atwal, and by his great granddaughter Noor Kavi Sabharwal.

Prayer and cremation services will begin at 11:00 am at Chapel of the Twin Cities located at 715 Shasta Street, Yuba City, California 95991 on Friday, February 10, 2017, officiated by Bhai Sahib Singh. Langar and Bhog services will follow at Sikh Temple Yuba City, in Tierra Buena.
