Virgil J. Azevedo, 95, of Maxwell, passed away in the comfort of his home on October 24, 2016. He was born in Crescent City, Calif., on June 12, 1921 to Wilhelmina and John Azevedo.

Virgil, otherwise known as "Virg", had an outstanding sports career in high school where he excelled in speed ball, basketball, and baseball. During the 1940s, he played for the Crack Colusa Knights and throughout the same years, Virgil was a standout pitcher and catcher for the Colusa Pruners. He pitched softball well into his late fifties and won titles for Maxwell in 1962 and 1963. Virgil was a Colusa County Hall of Fame inductee in 2004.

In 1946, Virgil joined the US Army and served as a cook.

Virgil married his wife Ginny in 1945 and raised their family in Maxwell. The couple enjoyed spending their summers fishing at Diamond Lake; fishing was Virgil's favorite past time.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Wilhelmina and John Azevedo; brother John L. Azevedo and two sisters, Mary Baker and Dolly Norton.

He is survived by his wife Ginny Azevedo; his sons Tim (Celeste) Azevedo and Mark (Dianna) Azevedo; grandchildren Nick Azevedo, Kim (Dino) McCarty, Pat (Nikki) Azevedo, and Jeremy (Cheri) Azevedo; great grandchildren Kendal, Bailey and Hayden McCarty, and Brittany, Derrick, Matthew, Jordan, Hannah, and Hollie Azevedo.

A Rosary will be held on Monday, October 31, 2016 at 7:00 pm in the McNary Moore Chapel, 107 5th St., Colusa and Visitation from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at the Maxwell Sacred Heart Church, 45 Elm Street, Maxwell.

Donations can be made to the Maxwell Fire Department.
