Walter Ray Flanary Obituary

Walter Ray Flanary, 85, passed away May 27, 2016, in Napa, CA surrounded by love and family. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Harriett (Amundsen) Flanary of Sonoma, son David Flanary (Heather) of Santa Rosa, and daughter Elizabeth Flanary Miller (Shawn) of Sonoma and two grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters Arlene Cartoscelli of Las Cruces, New Mexico and Patricia Rollins of Port Dora, Florida and many nieces and nephews.

Walter was born July 9, 1930 in Hilo, Hawaii to Emma Grace Serrao and Walter Ray Flanary. As a child of a US Navy family, he grew up in many places including Hawaii, Rhode Island, Virginia and San Diego before the family settled in Yuba City in 1945. He graduated from Yuba City High School in 1948 and enlisted in the US Navy. He was a veteran of the Korean War.

As an electrical engineer, Walter worked for Caltrans during the highway building boom and retired in 1982 after serving for 34 years. Walter enjoyed sailing and restoring sports cars. In retirement, Walter and Harriett had moved to Sonoma to be close to family. They enjoyed years of traveling in their 5th wheel, cruises to many destinations and wintering in Tucson and Yuma Arizona. Walter was an avid gardener and a genealogical enthusiast; he had traced his ancestry to the 1700's.

The family is planning a private memorial service.
