Gloria E. Selberg
Gloria E. Selberg, 79 and 358 days, passed away February 21, 2013 at Sanford Health Center surrounded by her loving family.
Gloria Selberg, daughter of Clayton and Ethel (Perkins) Derby, was born in rural Verndale, MN on February 28, 1933. She attended country school at Todd County Dist. #55. In 1945, she moved with her family to Wadena, MN where she attended and graduated from Wadena Public High School. Gloria graduated from Minneapolis Business College and was employed in Minneapolis before working at Mt. Rushmore National Park, Keystone, SD. While there she met and married Don Selberg on December 19, 1954 at the First Congregational Church, in Rapid City, SD. They lived in Vermillion, SD until Don's graduation. During that time, Gloria worked for USD in the Sports News Dept.
Don's military career took them to Ft. Sill, OK, where their daughter Cindy was born. After moving to Ft. Bliss, TX, they then moved to Baumholder, Germany where they lived for nearly four years and where Vicky and Pam were born. They lived in Ft. Sill, OK, Ft. Bliss, TX, and Ft. Hood, TX. As a military spouse and with a husband deployed to Korea and Vietnam, Gloria was very involved with her daughter's lives. She taught Sunday school, was a MYF Leader, Girl Scout Leader, Girl Scout Cookie Chairman, and involved in PTA and school activities.
Gloria enjoyed sewing and made many of the girl's clothes including their choir and prom formals and special clothes for school activities. She also made Barbie Dolls clothes for her daughters and their friends so their dolls were always fashionably attired. She was very proud to have sewn her daughter's wedding and bridesmaid's dresses.
After Don's military career, they moved to Rapid City in 1969. Gloria returned to full-time employment when the girls were in high school, working at Western Health Systems and Pennington County Highway Dept. In 1981 they moved to Sioux Falls to be closer to their children and grandchildren. At that time she started as the Executive Director of the Lions Sight and Service Foundation. She retired from this position in 1997.
Gloria was a member Asbury United Methodist Church, The UMW and Esther Circle, receiving their Special Recognition. She held many offices and served on many church committees. She had a deep faith.
Gloria was a member of the Sioux Falls Lioness, Downtown Lions and Sioux Rise Lions Clubs. She was awarded the South Dakota Lions Hall of Fame Award and the Lions International Melvin Jones Fellow. Volunteering was a very important part of her life and she volunteered at many community places of need.
Her greatest joy and blessing was her family. Spending time with her husband, their children, grandchildren and now great-grandchildren was very special. Baking chocolate chip cookies or attending their activities was always a great time. Traveling was a favorite activity. She and Don had wonderful vacations, trips and tours. Europe, Great Britain, Mexico, Alaska and nearly all of the lover states were visited. As a family they enjoyed traveling and camping.
Gloria enjoyed life, she enjoyed people and she enjoyed fun times. Past time activities included reading, crafts, shopping, cooking, and even cleaning. Vision loss took away her past time activity of driving, but to Gloria that was no big deal, "it was just a part of life" that allowed her partner of 58 years to take over that detail. What a love affair! Her extended family was also important. Family reunions were great occasions that allowed her to travel back to Wadena, MN, and reconnect with loved ones. She would want everyone to have that opportunity.
Gloria is survived by her husband, Donald; children, Cindy (Jim) Iversen, Vicky (Harry) Rossander, Pam (Tony) Smith; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sister, June Osborn, and many special nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; Clayton and Ethel Derby and Bonita "Bunny" Melzer.
A service of remembrance will be held 11:00 am Monday, February 25, 2013 at Asbury United Methodist Church. A memorial visitation will be 5:30 - 7:30 pm Sunday February 24, 2013 at Heritage Funeral Home with a prayer service at 6:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the SD Lions Eye Bank, Sioux Rise Lions Club, Asbury UMW, or Asbury UMC parish nurse.

We had the pleasure of meeting Gloria and Don when they joined our church group study with Vick & Harry, and attended services with us all on one of their trips to Iowa.
