William Nelson Obituary

William F. "Bill" Nelson

William Frederick "Bill" Nelson, 82, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, August 27.

A visitation will begin at 12:00 pm Monday, September 2, 2013 at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Ave., with the family present from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday, September 3, 2012 at Miller Funeral Home. Bill will be laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery following the service.

Bill was born on January 24, 1931, in Worthington, Minnesota, to Oscar and Meta (Dietrich) Nelson. He grew up in Sherburn and Worthington and graduated from Worthington High School in 1949. Shortly after graduating from high school, Bill joined the Air Force to serve in the Korean War and was stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi, Great Falls, Montana, and Guam. While stationed in Biloxi, Bill married the love of his life, Darlene Mae Christians, on March 31, 1951.

Bill and Darlene made their home in Sioux Falls, where Bill attended Nettleton College and worked for John Morrell. They moved to Valley Springs to raise their young family in 1963. Bill retired from John Morrell at the young age of 50 and thoroughly enjoyed his retirement years. Bill and Darlene owned and operated several antique shops in the Sioux Falls area and moved to Hill City, SD, in 1991, where they had an antique shop until they returned to Sioux Falls in 2007.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Darlene, and his four children, William (Sharon) Nelson, Brandon, Brenda (Bill) Redmond, Scottsdale, Robert (Debra) Nelson, Sioux Falls, and Don, Sioux Falls, and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Meta, his sisters, Norma and LaVerna, and his brother Norman.

Bill will be fondly remembered for his quick wit, warm smile and brilliant mind. He enjoyed photography and was an avid reader who was widely known for his knowledge of antiques and collectibles. He was quiet but thoughtful and will be missed greatly, but never forgotten, by his family and friends.
