Matthew Balk

Matthew Balk, age 85, passed away Friday August 2, 2013. The family will greet friends from 6:00-7:00 pm, with a scripture service at 7:00 pm, Monday August 5th at Miller Funeral Home, 13th Main Ave. Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 9:30 am Tuesday at the Cathedral of St. Joseph, with burial and military rites to follow at St. Michael Cemetery.

Matthew Lawrence John Balk, son of Matthew Lawrence and Gladys (Matthies) Balk, was born January 1, 1928 on a farm near Humboldt, SD. He grew up and received his education in the Hartford and Wall Lake, SD area. He then served in the Army Air Corps in 1946-1947. After his military service, he began working at John Morrell & Company in January of 1948. He retired in 1988 after 40 years of service.

Matthew was united in marriage to Deloris (Lou) Wargo on August 2, 1952 in Onida, SD. Lou preceded him in death in 1995.

Matt was an avid angler and waterfowl hunter and a lifetime member of the American Legion. He was very proud of his Honor Flight trip to Washington D.C.

Grateful for having shared his life are his daughter, Kerry Darger, Sioux Falls, his grandchildren, Nichole Ronke and her children, Laina and Isaiah, Adam (Jennifer) Darger and their children, Taylor, Alyssa, Dylan, Big Ayden, Lil Ayden, Peyton and Bryson, Kyle Darger and his son, Logan; one sister, Gloria Koenekamp; two sisters in-law, Lois Balk, and Marlys Balk, both of Sioux Falls; and a special friend, Margaret Carlson.

His parents, and brothers Patrick, Marvin and Frank, and sisters, Evelyn and Cleone also preceded him in death.
