Vernon R. Kock

Vernon R. Kock, 87, of Sioux Falls, died Sunday, February 10, 2013 at Good Samaritan Village.

Vernon was born August 27, 1925 at Canistota, South Dakota. He moved with his family to Colton, SD where he received his education.

He enlisted in the US Navy in 1943 at the age of 17. He served his country during World War II where he received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the Bronze Star, Philippine Liberation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Vernon received his honorable discharge from the Navy in April of 1946.

On June 11, 1948, he was united in marriage with Doloris Rang at Canistota, SD. The couple lived in Sioux Falls where Vernon worked for John Morrell and Co. During his years at Morrell's, he became active in the local union, #304-A where he had served as a union steward. He retired from Morrell's in 1984 after 34 years of service.

Vernon was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and a life member of V.F.W. Post #628 in Sioux Falls.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Doloris, of Sioux Falls; his son, Kenneth (Patricia) Kock of Boise, Idaho; two daughters, Victoria Choate of Sioux Falls, SD and Brenda (Blake) Lidstrom, of Ketchum, Idaho; four grandchildren, Trevenen (Sasheen) Castle, Kendra (Scott) Herzog, Kelly (Patrick) Minikon and Kelsey (Huston) Brashears; and 3 great grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Loyd Kock of Sioux Falls, SD.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son-in-law, Bill Choate; 4 brothers, Melvin, Donald, Loren and Walt; and 3 sisters, Clara, Viola, and Deloris.

Memorial services will begin 1:00 pm Friday at First United Methodist Church. Interment with military honors will be in Hills of Rest Memorial Park. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:30 to 7:00 pm Thursday at Miller Funeral Home, Main Avenue location.
