Reverend Ballard Blount

Reverend Ballard Blount, 94, of Huron, SD, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 1, 2016, at the Sunquest Nursing Home.

Ballard Britten Blount, son of Edward and Katheryn (Carter) Blount, was born on January 7, 1922, in Beattyville, KY. He grew up in Middeltown, OH, and graduated from high school in 1941. Ballard enlisted with the United States Army Air Corps and served in Brazil during WWII until being honorably discharged.

Ballard was united in marriage with Joyce Ramsey on May 6, 1948, in Middletown, OH. Ballard attended college at the William Jewell College, graduating in 1954. He attended Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Missouri until taking a position in admissions at William Jewell. Ballard worked at Sioux Falls College from 1960 to 1974 as the Director of Development. He took a call as head pastor of First Baptist Church in Huron, SD from 1974 to 1984, and then at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Sioux Falls until retiring in 1994. Ballard remained active serving at First Baptist Church in Centerville, SD, for over 12 years.

Ballard had a gentle and kind soul. The Lord was at the core of his heart and he strove to help people in all aspects of their lives. He enjoyed gardening and took great pleasure in entertaining friends and family. He cherished time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Ballard was a member of First Baptist Church in Sioux Falls and was a long-time member of the Downtown Sioux Falls Lions Club.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Joyce, Huron, SD; son Scott Blount and his wife Raquel, Sioux Falls, SD; daughters Robyn Stevens and her husband Mark, Peoria, AZ, Lori Magness and her husband Brad, Huron, SD; 8 Grandchildren; 5 Great Grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Ballard was preceded in death by his parents, 8 brothers, and 3 sisters.

Visitation with the family present will be from 5 to 7 pm on Monday, June 6, 2016, at Miller Funeral Home, 507 South Main Avenue. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, June 7, 2016, at First Baptist Church in Sioux Falls with private burial at Woodlawn Cemetery.
