Interment will be in Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Tuesday.

Charles was born on September 14, 1930 in Letcher, SD to Harvey and Mary Johnson. He attended grade school at the Christopher School in Letcher and then attended Mt. Vernon Public School. Charles was united in marriage to Joy J. Sibbers on July 15, 1951 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Wolsey. They resided in Huron until November of 1951 when Charles enlisted in the US Army. Over the next two years, they lived in Louisiana and Kentucky until 1953 when Charles was honorably discharged from the Army. They returned to Huron where they resided until 2008 when they moved to Sioux Falls. Charles spent his whole career in various positions with the USDA Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) and was chief of the Administrative Division at the time of his retirement on January 3, 1986 after 35 years of government service.

Charles enjoyed fishing, hunting, reading on his Kindle, and playing cards. He had a knack for being able to fix most anything and really enjoyed doing this for his family and friends. He also enjoyed refurbishing antiques and was very meticulous in his restoration work. Charles had a sense of humor and loved teasing his family and friends. He was proud of his ability to prepare Walleye, never knowing what batter he was going to use. Charles and Joy traveled the U.S. extensively in their retirement years and were able to visit all 50 states several times which included visiting every state capital as part of their traveling goal. They also went on many cruises to the Caribbean, Alaska, and Hawaii; many of which included spending quality time with their children and grandchildren.

Charles was a member of American Lutheran Church in Huron, RSVP, Huron Senior Center, Center for Active Generations, NARFE, the American Legion/40et8, and Huron bowling leagues for 49 years.

Charles is survived by his wife, Joy Johnson; one son, Dr. Bradley (Debbie) Johnson; one daughter, Rhonda Trudeau; two granddaughters, Amanda and Emily Johnson; two brothers, Hurley Johnson and Leo Johnson; and two sisters, Jewel Eppendanz and Roseline Wadleigh.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Delbert, Norman, Merle, and Ronald Johnson; two brothers-in-law, Raymond Eppendanz and David Wadleigh; and three sisters-in-law, Darylene Johnson, Betty Johnson and Evelyn Johnson.
