Father Charles Cleveland Thayer, 85, died Friday, April 21, 2017 at his home in Sioux Falls, SD. He was a retired priest of the Episcopal Diocese of Fond du Lac, WI. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated in Calvary Episcopal Cathedral Tuesday, April 25, 2017. His ashes will be taken to St. Thomas' Episcopal Church, Abingdon, VA to be reposed in the columbarium Chapel of the Resurrection at a later date.

Fr. Thayer was born in Abingdon, VA on July 12, 1931. He was educated at Emory and Henry College, VA; Drew University, NJ; University of Minnesota, Minneapolis; and Nashotah House Episcopal Theological Seminary, WI. He was ordained to the priesthood at St. John's Church, Roanoke, VA on December 21, 1959.

During his active ministry he served Kingsley Methodist Church, Kingsport, TN; St. John's Church, Roanoke, VA; St. Mark's Church and Grace House on the Mountain, St. Paul, VA; St. Mark's Cathedral, Minneapolis, MN; St. Mary's Hall & the Cathedral of Our Merciful Saviour, Faribault, MN; St. Martin's, Fairmont, MN; and St. Augustine's, Rhinelander, WI. He retired early from active parochial ministry in 1987 for reasons of health. Since retirement he served for nineteen years as Priest Associate of his home parish, St. Thomas, Abingdon, VA. Since moving to Sioux Falls in 2006, he has served as Priest Associate at the Church of the Holy Apostles and at Calvary Episcopal Cathedral.

Fr. Thayer was married to Evelyn Marie Brush of Sidney, NY in 1956. They raised one son, Hugh Grant Thayer, who lived in Sioux Falls until his death in September 2011. Fr. Charles is survived by his wife, Evelyn; three grandchildren: Michele Thayer Anderson (Shannon) of Fairmont, MN; Grant Michael Thayer and Drew Ronald Thayer both of Sioux Falls; and two great granddaughters: Alyvia Elizabeth Anderson and Amelia Marie Anderson. In addition to his son, Hugh, Fr. Thayer was preceded in death by his parents: Charles Cleveland Thayer, Sr. and Margaret Lee Smith Thayer; his sister, Miss Frances Thayer; and two infant brothers.

Fr. Thayer was a member of the catholic devotional societies of the Anglican Communion. He was a Priest Confrater of the Benedictines of St. Gregory's Abbey in MI; an Associate of the Sisters of the Holy Nativity, WI; and Priest Associate of the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham in Norfolk, England. He was a member of the Society of King Charles the Martyr and the Society of Mary. He was also actively involved in the alumni associations of the educational institutions he attended, especially that of his seminary. He was also a member of Kiwanis in the various communities where he lived.

In Minnesota Fr. Charles was Dean of two of the Diocesan Regions successively and the Diocesan Liturgical Officer. In Fond du Lac he was a rural Dean and a member of the Executive board, the Diocesan Council, the Standing Committee, the Ecclesiastical Court, and Cursillo.

The Reception of the Body and the Vigil will be on Monday, April 24, 2017 at 5:00 o'clock in the evening in Calvary Episcopal Cathedral followed by a brief reception to greet the family.

The funeral Mass at Calvary Episcopal Cathedral on Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at 10:00 o'clock in the morning will be celebrated by the Rt. Rev'd John Tarrant and the Very Rev'd Ward Simpson. The Rev'd Warren Shoberg, SSC, will be the homilist. The Mass will be followed by a reception in the Cathedral Commons.

The family requests that memorials be directed to Calvary Episcopal Cathedral.
