Clair E. Leonhardt, 83, of Oldham, SD, passed away surrounded by his family on August 27, 2016 at Regions Hospital, St Paul, MN as the result of a farm accident.

Clair was born February 3, 1933 at Huron, SD to Roland and Gladys (Edwards) Leonhardt. The family moved to the Oldham area when Clair was in the fourth grade. He graduated from Oldham High School in 1950. He was united in marriage to Phyllis Lee, his high school sweetheart, on June 1, 1953. He was drafted into the US Army in November of 1953. His active service years were spent at Ft. Riley, Kansas and Ft. Carson, Colorado. He was honorably discharged on October 7, 1955 as a Specialist Third Class. He returned to Kingsbury County and was a lifetime farmer. In 1970 he began attending Dakota State University and earned a BA in science. He taught high school science for 12 years in Carthage, SD and finished his teaching career at the Grant-Deuel School District in Revillo, SD. He retired in 1996 and returned to the family farm at Oldham.

He was an active member of the Oldham Lutheran Church, serving in many capacities. He served as a director on the Kingsbury REA board and the Spring Lake Church cemetery board. He enjoyed being outdoors, working on the farm and spending time with his family and friends. His children and grandchildren were the joy of his life. He was a quiet, Christian role model to all who knew him and will be greatly missed.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 63 years, Phyllis Leonhardt of Oldham, SD. His children, Danelle (Lew) Brown of Brookings, SD, Rick (Rachel Brown) Leonhardt of Sioux Falls, SD, Deann (Brett) Jensen of Madison, SD, Dora (Todd) Jensen of Ramona, SD and daughter-in-law, Jacquelyn Leonhardt of Lake Preston, SD, 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, a brother, Dale (Mavis) Leonhardt of Oldham, SD, a sister, Sonja Wood of Huntsville, AL and a sister-in-law, Linda Leonhardt of Aledo, TX.

Clair was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Arlyn Leonardt, his brother, Joy Leonhardt and his brother-in-law, Gary Wood.

Funeral services for Mr. Leonhardt will be at 10:30 am on Friday, September 2, 2016 at the Oldham Lutheran Church with Pastor Joanne Nagele officiating, burial will be in the Spring Lake Covenant Cemetery, rural Arlington. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm on Thursday, September 1, 2016 in the Oldham Lutheran Church and preceding services. A prayer service will be held at 7 pm on Thursday in the church.
