Darlene Sheddan Obituary
Darlene Sheddan

Darlene Ethyl Berdahl Sheddan was born November 24, 1924 to William J. and Clara Berg Berdahl in Colton, SD. Darlene grew up in Colton, the oldest of five girls. She graduated from Augustana University in Sioux Falls, SD and then moved to Cleveland where she trained to be a Medical Technician. Darlene accepted a position at a hospital in Boston and a year later accepted a position at a hospital in Memphis where she met Sam Sheddan. They were married in 1951.

Darlene and Sam made a home in East Memphis where they lived and raised their two children, Stephanie and Sam (Chip). Darlene taught Biology at Fairley High School and later at Mitchell Road High School. She then returned to medical technology work at UT Wm. F. Bowld Hospital in Memphis.

Darlene loved the church and was a founding member of both Bethany Lutheran Church and Lord of Life Lutheran Church. She most enjoyed singing in the church choir and attending organ recitals. If anything was happening at church, Darlene was at the forefront serving in her delightful way.

Even though Darlene remained in Memphis for the rest of her life, part of her heart remained in South Dakota. Darlene and her family enjoyed summer vacations in South Dakota with her parents, her sisters, aunts, uncles and cousins. She also enjoyed travelling with her sisters and church groups to Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

Darlene passed away Monday morning, October 24th. She is survived by her two children: Stephanie (Gary) Garner of Bend, OR, Sam Wilson Sheddan III and daughter-in-law, Connie Sheddan, of Germantown, TN and three grandchildren: Quinn (Whitney) Garner of Bountiful, UT, Parker Sheddan and Hanna Sheddan, both residing in Memphis and a great-grandson: Harrison Garner. She also leaves three sisters: Beverly Berdahl Skrovig of Colton, SD, Cleone Berdahl Foster of Chanhassen, MN and Wilma Jo Berdahl (Ernie) Swier of Brandon, SD. Darlene was predeceased by her husband: Sam Wilson Sheddan Jr. and her beloved sister: Marilyn Berdahl Kluter of Sioux Falls as well as brothers-in-law: Bob Skrovig, Bill Kluter and Norm Foster.

Ever grateful for the time we spent with her, a celebration of her life will be held on Friday, November 4th from 5-7 p.m. in the Life Remembrance Center of Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Avenue, Memphis. A church service will be held Saturday, November 5th at 11 a.m. at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 6865 Poplar Pike, Memphis. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 6865 Poplar Pike, Memphis, TN 38119.
