Darrel Ray Sewalson Obituary
Darrel Ray Sewalson

Darrel Sewalson, 80, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, returned to his heavenly home on January 8, 2016 after a valiant battle with dementia. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God supported him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace.

Born on a farm near Colton, South Dakota on October 23, 1935, he remained in the area his entire life. After graduating from high school, he earned an associate degree in accounting from Nettleton Commercial College. He began working vocationally as a milk man and then later as an internal auditor for a petroleum company, but the majority of his career was spent selling cleaning supplies and equipment for various companies.

Darrel was blessed with a loving family. He married Arlys Sewalson (Hetland) on August 11, 1956. They had two children and spent their entire married life in Sioux Falls.

He was a dedicated husband and father who lived life to the fullest. His relationship with Jesus Christ was central in his life. He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church where he taught Sunday school, served as an usher, and was active in Lutheran Men in Mission. Having played the trombone as a young man and later mastering the harmonica and accordion, he was a multi-talented musician. Darrel's other passionate interests included painting pictures, traveling and absorbing the great outdoors, especially chasing after walleyes in his boat.

Darrel was a servant at heart. He was a kind and soft-spoken man who always had time to offer a helping hand. He is dearly missed by his loved ones, who celebrate the fact that he is at peace with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Darrel is survived by his wife Arlys, his daughter Ann Lawrence (Omaha, NE), his son Mark Sewalson and wife Lisa (Olathe, KS), his sister Shirley Conser (Yuma, AZ), his grandchildren Kyle Sewalson and wife Michaela (Olathe, KS), Emily Murphy and husband Taylor (Olathe, KS), and Nikki Lawrence (Lincoln, NE). He was preceded in death by his father Lawrence "Shorty" Sewalson, mother Loraine Sewalson-Severson, sister Anita Maltheson and his step-father Bud Severson.

Visitation will be held at Heritage Funeral Home (4800 S. Minnesota Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD 57108) beginning at 4:00 on Thursday, January 14, 2016 with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00. Funeral services will be held at Our Saviors Lutheran Church (909 W. 33rd, Sioux Falls, SD 57105) at 2:00 on Friday, January 15, 2016 with a reception and graveside service to follow. Memorials may be given to Our Saviors Lutheran Church or the Sioux Falls Gospel Rescue Mission, two of Darrel's most cherished Christian organizations.
