David Smith

David Smith, 85, of Sioux Falls, died Saturday, July 1, 2017 at his residence in Sioux Falls.

David W. Smith was born October 27, 1931 at Moulmein, Burma to Joseph and Edna Smith, missionaries. He moved to the United States with his family in 1941, settling in Sioux Falls, SD. He received his education in Sioux Falls, graduating from Washington High School in 1949. He continued his education at Sioux Falls College.

He entered military service in 1951, serving in the United States Marine Corp. While in the Marines, David served in Korea in 1952. He was the recipient of a Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V". He received his honorable discharge from the Marines in 1954, at which time, he resumed his education at Sioux Falls College. He later attended The University of South Dakota in Vermillion from which he earned his Master's Degree.

While attending Sioux Falls College, David met Megan Roberts, and the two were married on May 25, 1953 in Bronxville, New York.

David taught school in Salem, SD later transferring to Aberdeen, SD to teach at Aberdeen Central High School. During his teaching career, David was president of SDEA in 1971. In 1977, he resigned from teaching and moved to Iowa to work for the Iowa Education Association. He retired from that position in 2001. He and Megan moved to Sioux Falls in 2004. Megan preceded him in death on February 8, 2012.

Grateful for having shared his life are his children, Mark (Ruth) Smith of Pierre, SD and Eric (Sheryl) Smith of Sioux Falls, SD; his grandchildren, Matthew (Dawn) Hillman, Adam (Jena) Smith, Nathan Smith, Robert (Abby Gylfe) Smith, Levi (Suzanne) Smith and Samantha (Trever Heining) Smith; two great grandchildren, Gavyn and Cadyn Smith; and his siblings, Eleanor Howard of Jackson, MN, Art (Darlene) Smith of Midland, MI, and Helen (Willard) Olson of Piedmont, SD. In addition to his wife, David was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Joseph Smith, Margaret Dailey and Elizabeth Sullivan; his brothers-in-law, Robert Howard, George Sullivan and Rodney Dailey; and his sister-in-law Gwyneth and her husband William Kinner.

Memorial services will begin 1:00 pm Monday at Miller Funeral Home, Main Avenue location. Interment will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Sioux Falls. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Sioux Falls Special Olympics.
