Dian Rae Hander-Mehrer Obituary
Dian Rae Hander-Mehrer

Dian Rae Hander-Mehrer entered the Spirit World on Aug. 12, 2016, due to complications from sudden acute leukemia. She passed peacefully, accompanied by her loving partner Joey Jones, at Baker Hospital in Bradenton, FL. She was 69.

Dian was born June 12, 1947, in Sioux Falls, SD to Benjamin Hander and Emma "Pat" Keupp. She was the first member in her family to graduate from college in 1979, with a nursing degree from The University of South Dakota. She worked as a traveling nurse for several years. She also worked as a hospice coordinator, nursing director, nursing consultant, and operated her own assisted living home in Rapid City, SD for four years. Her favorite jobs were as an ER nurse and a psych nurse. She was semi-retired, working as an in-home nursing companion.

In addition to her deep love of nursing, her passions were animals, the arts, traveling, fishing, camping, Angostura Reservoir, the holidays, hockey games, boating, motorcycles, bicycling, and rose bushes, to name just a few. She maintained numerous friendships across the country, often arranging trips, cruises, and other adventures, sometimes misadventures!

Most of all she cherished her kids, grandkids, and precious great grandson. She was kind, loving, compassionate, and humble, always doing what she could, and never wavering in her commitment to life. She went to church and she believed in her Creator, quietly demonstrating herself through her love. She will be dearly missed.

She is survived by her brother, Don Hander, Lead, SD; her son, "Nick" Carroll Swan Jr, Rapid City, SD, and her daughter, Shawna Lutz (Rick), Denver, CO; her grandchildren, Ashley Fisher (Brandon), Longmont, CO, Kirsten Lutz, Denver, CO, and Tanner Lutz, Denver, CO; and her great grandson, Dorian Fisher, Longmont, CO.

No memorial service is set at this time. Her remains will be cremated and dispersed by her family in her beloved Black Hills. Please channel condolences to the webpage: The Dian Mehrer Memorial Scholarship.
