Donald Harris

Donald William Harris, age 91, of Sioux Falls, SD (formerly of Mitchell, SD), died Sunday, September 20, 2015 at the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Thursday, September 24, 2015 at the Will Funeral Chapel with burial and military rites at the American Legion Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM Thursday at the Will Funeral Chapel.

Don W. Harris, son of Charles and Evangeline Harris was born on January 4, 1924 in Beaver Creek, MN. Don attended school in Beaver Creek. He then moved to California with his family and was married to LaVera Kelm on September 24, 1942. Their son Robert was born on June 30, 1943.

He was inducted into the US Army on January 14, 1943 and served in Europe during World War II and was honorably discharged from the US Army on November 25, 1945.

Don and his wife LaVera moved from California to Minnesota for a number of years. They and their four children moved to South Dakota in 1952 to begin farming. In 1962 they moved to Mitchell, SD where Don did carpentry work for many years. After that he worked for the school systems doing custodial and carpentry. Don took great pleasure in building things for the classroom and special needs students. He retired from this at the age of 72.

Don and LaVera moved to Sioux Falls in 2007 and resided at the Good Samaritan until 2015. LaVera passed on April 15, 2015. Don was admitted into hospice at the VA in June of 2015 and passed on September 20, 2015.

Grateful for having shared his life are sons, Ron (Jerilyn) Harris, Sioux Falls, SD, Jerry (Penny) Harris, Minneapolis, MN; a daughter, Darlene (Bruce) Schenemann, Chapin, SC; a daughter-in-law, Mary Harris, Mitchell, SD; 11 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; two brothers, Chuck (Grace) Harris, Cherry Valley, CA, Allen (Marilyn) Harris, Redding, CA; two sisters, Mary (Larry) Doppke, Lakewood, WA and Helen Crane, Seal Beach, CA.

He was preceded in death by his wife, LaVera; a son, Robert Harris; a great grandson, Kailer Pederson; his parents; two brothers, David and James.
