Donald Koistinen

Donald LaVern Koistinen, age 77, Lake Preston, passed away in the early morning hours of Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at the De Smet hospital.

Don was born July 11, 1939 to Adrian & Edna Koistinen on the family farm near Lake Norden. As a young boy, Don attended school in Lake Norden and helped on the family farm. He also spent a lot of time helping on his uncles farms in the area.

While attending Lake Norden High School, he was involved in a variety of sports and to this day holds the Pole Vaulting record there.

In 1957 he married his high school sweetheart, Mae Gullickson. To this union 3 children were born, Wade in 1958, Kimberli in 1959 and Moni in 1964.

Don worked at several occupations in his younger years, including his own trucking company. While in Madison, he started his career with the modular home industry at Guerdon Industries becoming production manager. Don was known as a troubleshooter for modular home production and his services were requested in many locations in the United States. Following his career, he and his family moved to various locations including Boise, Idaho, Rapid City, SD, North Vernon, IN and Phoenix, AZ.

Returning to Rapid City in the 90's, Don was employed by Ditch Witch and Vermeer Equipment as Sales Manager and General Manager.

Don lost his wife, Mae, of 41 years in 1999, due to complications of Alzheimers and Breast Cancer. He later married Patricia Johnson, retiring and moving to Lake Preston, SD. They enjoyed 15 years together.

Don will be remembered as a hard worker, loving father and grandfather. As an avid hunter and fisherman, he and his brother, Duke, were often seen in daylight or dark, in the sloughs and lakes of South Dakota, pestering the deer, fish and pheasants whether in season or not.

Don will be dearly missed by his wife Patricia of Lake Preston, son Wade (Ronnie), Independence, MO, daughter Kimberli (Robert) Fehr, Piedmont, SD, daughter Moni (Robert) Gubka, Rapid City, SD, six grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 2 sisters, Barbara Ruotsalainen, Lake Norden, LaVonne (Bill) Miller of Bismarck, ND and several nieces and nephews.
