Dorothy Jean Gaumer Obituary
Dorothy Jean Gaumer

Dorothy Jean Gaumer, 96, of Ottumwa, Iowa and formerly of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Inwood, Iowa, peacefully departed this world on Thursday, August 18, 2016 at Good Samaritan Center in Ottumwa, Iowa. Dorothy was born Dorothy Jean Griffith on May 28, 1920 in Garvin, MN to H. Leon and Ina Griffith. She had three brothers and one sister, H. Clair Griffith, Fred J. Griffith, Shirley (Griffith) Zigmund and Darwin J. Griffith. Dorothy graduated from Revillo, S.D. High School and completed Minnesota Business College in Minneapolis, MN.

Dorothy worked in Washington, DC at the Farm Credit Administration. One of Dorothy's favorite stories was about having tea on the lawn of the White House with Eleanor Roosevelt. Dorothy met Clifford Gaumer while working in Washington, DC. During WWII, her offices were moved to Kansas City. Dorothy worked in Kansas City until Clifford returned from the service and they were married on May 12, 1946 in Ute, IA.

They moved to Ames, IA where Clifford attended Iowa State. Clifford took a teaching job at Inwood High School, later West Lyon Community School, as the Vocational Agriculture teacher and Dorothy was the superintendent's secretary, and later the Inwood City Clerk. Dorothy and Clifford spent over 25 years in Inwood. One of the biggest joys of their life was the Kum Two Pinochle Club -- good friends who played cards together over 50 years. She was also very active in the Inwood United Methodist Church.

Clifford and Dorothy moved to Sioux Falls where she worked for the Veteran's Administration. Following Clifford's passing, Dorothy moved to Ottumwa, IA, where she was very active at Willard Street United Methodist Church, especially committed to the Missions Committee. She moved to Timber Ridge Good Samaritan Center.

Her life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children: a son, Richard (Linda) Gaumer of Ottumwa and Denise Gaumer (Sam) Hutchison of Green Bay, WI; and her sister, Shirley (Joe) Zigmund of Pine River, MN. Dorothy's grandchildren, Emily Gaumer of Storm Lake, Laura (Jonathan) Cruz and great granddaughter, Maya of St. Charles, MO, Jeff Gaumer of New York City, Lucas and Nina Hutchison of Green Bay, WI; also numerous nieces and nephews whom she cherished. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford in 1998; her parents, H. Leon and Ina Griffith; brothers, H.Clair Griffith, Fred Griffith and Darwin Griffith; her in-laws: Ernest and Amy Gaumer; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Carl and Dorothy Gaumer.

Funeral services will be held at Willard Street United Methodist Church in Ottumwa, IA on Monday, August 22, 2016 at 11:00am. The family will be at the church one hour before the service. Graveside services will be at the Murray Cemetery in Murray, IA on Tuesday, August 23. Robertson-Jay Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Willard Street United Methodist Church or the Gaumer Scholarship Fund at the Indian Hills Community College Foundation. Dorothy's children want to thank Timber Ridge and the Good Samaritan Skilled Nursing Center for their care at the end of her life.
