Edward Hurley Obituary
Edward Hurley

Edward Bernard "Barney" Hurley, 81, died Tuesday March 28th, in his home in Sioux Falls, SD surrounded by his family.

Edward was born on April 21st, 1935, to Francis Bernard and Burneita (Clough) Hurley. He grew up in Ponca, NE, and began building transmitters at the age of fourteen with his good friend Pat Davey, also opening a TV repair shop and running the town's picture shows, during his teens. He graduated from Ponca High School in 1953. Following graduation, Barney served in the United States Army as a medical equipment technician. He attended St Benedict College in Atchison, KS, and went on to receive further training and many certifications in Electronic Engineering, for which he was extremely gifted. Barney had an expansive career working at KCAU Sioux City, Boeing in Seattle, KELO transmitters in Sioux Falls, and LodgeNet. During the tense time of the Cuban missile crisis, he worked in the missile silos in South Dakota, and was present when a group came from California to arm the missiles which in the end was not necessary.

Barney married the joy and love of his life, Rosemary (Devitt) Hurley on July 2nd, 1982. They shared 30 wonderful years together before Rosemary's passing on April 5th, 2012. Barney and Rosemary enjoyed taking trips and drives together along with living out their Catholic faith, praying and supporting each other in sickness and health. They were always involved in the lives of their family and friends.

It must be said that Barney had a love for life even when illness made him frail. Against all odds, he was determined to live out his life meeting every health challenge with faith, hope and perseverance. Barney appreciated each day as a gift and offered the life he was given continually back to the Lord.

Grateful for sharing his life are his sisters, Sheila Sechser, Sioux Falls, SD and Linda (Pat) Dotson, Fremont, NE; along with many caring nieces and nephews and extended family.

He is preceded in death by his parents and wife Rosemary.

The Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11am Tuesday, April 4th at Christ the King Church, 1501 W. 26th St. The wake service will be held at 7pm Monday, April 3rd with family present prior to the wake service for a time of visitation from 5-7pm at Miller Funeral Home - Westside Chapel, 6200 W. 41st St., Sioux Falls, SD.
