Elaine Cundy, 81, of Madison SD, formerly of Iroquois, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on February 17, 2017 at the Bethel Lutheran Home of Madison after a courageous and graceful five year battle with cancer and heart disease. Funeral services will begin on Wednesday, February 22, at 10:00am at the United Methodist Church in Madison. Family will be present at a visitation from 5:00-7:00pm on TODAY Tuesday, February 21, followed by a 7:00pm prayer service at the Kinzley Funeral Home in Madison.

Alice Elaine Pladsen was born October 6, 1935 to Ernest and Byrda (Smith) Pladsen in Isabel, SD. She attended country school near Isabel and graduated from Isabel High School in 1954. She attended Black Hills State Teachers College (BHSU) in Spearfish and after graduating with her Teachers Certificate, she taught in various country schools in western South Dakota. While teaching near Spearfish, Elaine met Dale Cundy and they were united in marriage on June 14, 1958 in Hettinger, ND. From this marriage, two children were born - Randall Del and Marie Alayna. They made their home in Huron for the first four years and then moved to Iroquois for the next 35 years where she continued to teach elementary school. Later, she worked at Raven Industries in DeSmet and at Beadle County Community Health in Huron. She moved to Madison in 1997 and was honored to provide daycare for her grandson, Austin. She later worked part-time at Madison Elementary School and operated a sewing business from her home. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and attended the United Methodist Church in Madison. Elaine's children and grandchildren were the joy of her life and recipients of her encouragement and faith. She loved spending time with them and supporting them at their events. She also enjoyed music, sewing/quilting/crocheting, gardening/nature, and word puzzles. Elaine had compiled an extensive genealogy of both families and loved poetry.

Grateful for having shared her life are her two children: Randy (Linda) Cundy and Marie (Chuck) Lohsandt all of Madison; four grandchildren: Robbie (Emily) Cundy of Sioux Center, IA, Michelle (Matt) Gray of Bright, Ontario, Canada, April Cundy of Sioux Falls, and Austin Lohsandt of Madison; five great-grandchildren: Drew, Grant, and Claire Cundy, Eloise and Silas Gray; three sisters: Ruby Lee Locken of Isabel, Lucille Schnabel of Houston, TX, and Darlene Geyer of DeSmet, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters (Dorothy Pogany of Pierre and Doris Eastman of Wadena, MN). www.kinzleyfh.com
