Sioux Falls - Elizabeth "Betty" Marie Nelson, 97, died Wednesday, February 28 at Luther Manor in Sioux Falls. She was born January 29, 1921 at Newell, SD to Nyna Mae (Boswell) and Sydney Clarke. She grew up in Newell, Hot Springs, and Omaha. After graduating from Omaha Central High School in 1938, she moved to Pierre, where she worked for the state Health Department. There, she met and married Ray Nelson on May 3, 1942, before he shipped out for WWII. After the war, they lived in Pierre and briefly in Colorado Springs.

In 1952, Betty contracted polio. She spent months recovering, and the rest of her life overcoming the roadblocks polio put in front of her.

In 1955 they moved to Big Stone City, then returned to Pierre in 1979 when Ray retired from banking.

In 1974, Betty earned a Medical Assistant Certificate from Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown. She enjoyed working in medical records at the hospitals in Ortonville, MN; Milbank, SD; and Pierre.

In 1986 Betty and Ray moved to Spearfish. Ray died in July 1989, and Betty moved to Sioux Falls in 1996 to be closer to family. She lived happily at Touchmark at All Saints for 17 years before moving to Good Samaritan Luther Manor in May 2013, where she received excellent care for the last years of her life.

Betty enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, reading, classical music, British drama on PBS, and the Black Hills. She visited England twice to see family landmarks. She was a devout, lifelong Episcopalian.

She is survived by her three children, John and David Nelson and Julie (John) Gehm of Sioux Falls; granddaughter Kate Nelson of Byron Bay, Australia; and grandsons Ross Miller of Brookings and Drew Miller of Sioux Falls.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 30, at Calvary Episcopal Cathedral, 500 S. Main Ave, Sioux Falls. Burial of cremated remains will be at Riverside Cemetery in Pierre.
