Frank D.o. Obituary

Frank W. Myers D.O.

- - Frank W. Myers D.O., age 85, died November 19th, 2018, surrounded by family, following years of illness with C.O.P.D. Frank was born in Parker, S.D. to Mark Wayne Myers, D.O. and Kathleen Frank Myers. He graduated from Hudson High School, the University of South Dakota in 1955, and the College of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines, Iowa in 1959.

Dr. Myers was a leader in Osteopathic Family Medicine, co-founding the Nordonia Hills Clinic in Northeast Ohio in 1960. There he helped to establish the first Osteopathic family residency in the country in 1973. That same year, he was named co-recipient of the Ohio Osteopathic General Practitioner of the Year award. He was active in the Ohio and American Osteopathic Associations. Following his concern about access to healthcare, he became involved in the creation of the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, moving to Athens, Ohio in 1976 to assist in the development of the curriculum and becoming dean in 1977. He steered the college as it grew from an initial class size of 24 to 100 students per class when he retired in 1993. Dr. Myers' voice was known to hundreds of thousands of listeners of the Family Health radio show, heard on stations around the United States as well as the Armed Forces Radio Network. Following his retirement he continued his service to the community, with volunteer work including health care services at Planned Parenthood and acting as treasurer for the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Athens.

While at U.S.D., Frank met his wife of 62 years, Lorraine (Ihrke) of Lake City, Iowa. He shared his beautiful bass voice with choirs in Hudson, S.D.; U.S.D.; Hudson, Ohio; and Athens, Ohio. Frank's outstanding professional career was matched by his love for and dedication to Lorraine (currently of Akron, Ohio); daughters Hallie Bowie (Scott Evans;) Keya Myers Alkire (Dave Alkire); and grandchildren Hannah Bowie, Aaron Bowie, and Dean Alkire.

A memorial service will be held in Athens, Ohio in January. In lieu of flowers, you may make a contribution in Frank Myers' name to Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio or the Ohio Osteopathic Scholarship Fund, PO Box 8130, Columbus, OH 43201.
