Gustav S. Okland, Sioux Falls, SD, died Monday, February 1, 2016, at Sanford / USD Medical Center. He was 84.

Gustav Sigve Okland was born November 7, 1931, in Forde, Hardland, Norway to John and Martha Okland. His father John was a captain of oil tankers that sailed the great lakes and spent the winter months in Norway. Before World War II, Martha sailed to New York and entered through Ellis Island with Gus and his younger brother Olav. Once in New York, they boarded a train and moved to Toledo, Ohio. Gus grew up in Toledo and entered the Navy upon graduation of high school to serve during the Korean war. After his service in the war ended, he worked for Kister Aircraft and Electronics and was relocated oversees to many countries including Iran, Germany, Greece and Brazil.

On August 12, 1965 he was united in marriage with Nancy Gayle Nearman in Bitburg, Germany and were loving parents to their two children. He started with Link Services in 1957 which later became Canadian Aviation Electronics. He specialized in flight simulators for fighter jets around the world which took him across the Midwest, Florida, California and New York in the United States and world wide in Egypt, Turkey, Philippines, Spain, Germany and England. He retired in 1994 and moved to Sioux Falls to be close to family. As Gus could not stand still for too long, he went back to work for the United States Transportation Security Administration at the Sioux Falls airport.

Gus and Nancy enjoyed traveling across Europe during their time oversees. He enjoyed creating stained glass lamps as a hobby and remained interested in computer technology and national politics. He had a passion for cars and once installed a new engine in an old sports car that he taught both his kids to drive. He was a member of First Lutheran Church.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Nancy; daughter's family, Vicki and Frank Cox, Sioux Falls, SD; son's family, Erik and Sonya Okland, Highlands Ranch, CO and four grandchildren, Jesse, McKenzie, Anders and Sophia; brother, Olav, Riverside, CA. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Martha.
