Dr. Guy Tam

Sioux Falls - Dr. Guy Eugene Tam, age 79, of Sioux Falls, SD passed away on Wednesday, September 12, 2018, after a brief illness. He was born January 23, 1939, in Panora, Iowa to Guy and Mary Tam. After growing up in Panora, Guy attended Grand View Junior College in Des Moines, Iowa and then the University of Iowa in Iowa City where he obtained his B.A. degree. He then studied for two years at the University of South Dakota Medical School, after which he attended the University of Iowa to obtain his M.D. in 1965. It was during his time at the University of South Dakota that Guy met and married Carolyn Knox in February 1964, who was to be his wife for more than 54 years.

Guy completed his internship with Sioux Valley Hospital. He then served his country in the Air Force as a Flight Surgeon at Williams Air Force Base in Chandler, Arizona. After his service, Guy returned to Sioux Falls to begin his professional medical career with the Donahue Clinic in 1968. He continued to practice as a family physician for over 36 years at Central Plains/Sanford Clinic until his retirement in June 2004. In addition to his medical practice, Guy served on numerous boards including: the Board of Directors for the South Dakota Foundation of Medical Care; President of the Seventh District Medical Society; Councilman for the State Medical Society; Chief of Staff at Sioux Valley Hospital; the Family Practice Residency Board; the Board of Directors for Dakota Care, and the Building Committee for the Donahue Clinic when the Central Plains Clinic building on Kiwanis Avenue was built.

Family was always important to Guy. There was a special place in his heart for Lake Okoboji, Iowa, where he spent part of every summer with his family doing water sports, taking boat rides, going to Arnold's Park, enjoying cookouts, and spending quality time with his family. Guy was also an avid hunter and a strong proponent of habitat management, conservation and sharing the passion of hunting with others. He enjoyed traveling with Carolyn and spending time with a lifelong, close-knit community of friends.

Guy is survived by his wife, Carolyn; his three daughters, Rebecca (John Hochstein), Laura (David Finken), and Paulette (David Cary); six grandchildren, Ethan, Kailyn, Emma, Claire, Isaac, and Cecilia; and his sister, Audrey (Bob Landers). He is proceeded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials in Guy's honor be given to the Sanford School of Medicine Tuition Assistance, South Dakota Pheasants Forever, and Christ the King School Tuition Assistance.
