1931 - 2017 Obituary Condolences
Helen Josephine Bly

Helen Josephine Olson, 85, of Sioux Falls, SD passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, January 7, 2017.

Her Memorial Service will be on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at 1:30 pm at The Church of the Good Shepherd Episcopal, 2707 W. 33rd Street, Sioux Falls with Rev. Christina O'Hara officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00 - 6:00 pm, with a sharing time at 5:00 pm, on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at Miller Funeral Home Downtown, 507 S. Main Ave., Sioux Falls, SD.

Helen was born near Belfield, ND on February 25, 1931 to Charles F. Olson and Lena LeDoux. She was the fifth of ten children. The family moved to Beltrami, MN to farm when Helen was 3 years old. She graduated from Fertile High School in 1949 and graduated as a medical technician from the College of Medical Terminology in Minneapolis, MN in 1950. Helen then moved to Sioux Falls and worked at McKennan Hospital as a lab technician from 1950-1953.

She was crowned Miss Mistletoe in Sioux Falls in 1952 and won the most congenial award at the Miss South Dakota Pageant.

Helen met her husband, Richard Bly from Garretson, SD on a blind date. They were married October 30, 1953 at Calvary Cathedral in Sioux Falls. Helen and Richard were Charter Members of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Sioux Falls and enjoyed golfing and bowling together. Richard was laid to rest in October 1987.

Helen kept active and involved with her church, serving many years on the Altar Guild, leading the Bridge Club, and playing Mah Jongg weekly with friends. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Helen's faith was expressed by her kindness and concern for others. The door to her home was always open where one would find fabulous meals sprinkled with laughter, friendship, and fellowship.

Thankful for sharing her life are her children, Carla Fisher and husband, Craig of Rapid City, Kevin and wife Jennifer Bly of Sioux Falls, Kregg and wife Angelia Bly of Brandon, MS, and Karen Ruby and husband Bryan of Sioux Falls; brothers, Frank and wife Lucille Olson, Edwin and wife Lorraine Olson, and Maurice and wife Joan Olson; she is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and good friends, Connie Pfiefer and Viola Peterson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; parents, Charles and Lena Olson; brothers, Elmer, Ray, LuVerne, and Willard; and sisters, Beatrice and Kathleen.
