Helen Tande was born to Raymond and Clarine (Nelson) Tande on August 21, 1931. She grew up in Arlington, South Dakota, graduating from Arlington High School in 1949. She majored in Home Economics at South Dakota State College and graduated in 1953. After marrying Gene Juve in 1953, she taught Home Ec in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota while Gene served as a helicopter pilot in Southeast Asia until a helicopter accident took his life in 1956. Helen and daughter Nancy then moved to Aberdeen, SD where she taught at Central High School until marrying John "Matt" Sutton, Jr. on January 1, 1958.

Matt moved Helen and Nancy to the original Sutton Ranch home place near Agar. The Flood Control Act of 1944 which flooded the ranch allowed Helen, to design and build her dream home high on the Missouri bluffs. Except for two moves to Pierre so Nancy and John could attend high school, Helen, a self-described town girl, lived the rest of the time very happily on the ranch.

Helen drove kids to Pierre for dance and piano on Thursdays and Saturdays for decades, in addition to coordinating and attending their numerous other activities. She attended Zonta meetings, and volunteered at Lutheran Memorial Church in Pierre as often as she could including serving on the committee to search for pastoral candidates. She cherished her high school and college friends, got together with them for annual reunions, and continues the round robin letters to this day.

She and Matt moved to Sioux Falls in 2011 to be near family. Declining health moved her into The Village nursing home in 2012 where she delighted the staff with her smile.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Paul Tande, brother-in-law Gillard Tenneboe, and nephew, Greg Tenneboe. She is survived by her husband, Matt, sister Doris Tenneboe of Clovis, Ca.; son John, daughter-in-law Rachelle, and grandsons Jack and Sam Sutton of Sioux Falls; daughter Nancy and granddaughter Mary Lynn Smith of Norfolk, Ne.
