Obituary Condolences

Jean Califf

Jean Califf passed away on November 19th, 2015 at Mill Pond Health Care Center in Ankeny, Iowa. Betty Jean Dreyer was born on June 2nd, 1925 to Charles Alonzo and Mary Mabel (Perdue) Dreyer. She was born on a farm that her father homesteaded near Winner, SD. Her early years of education included schools in Winner and Witten, SD, and Madrid, NM. She married Charlton Califf in 1942. She learned how to ride a horse, sort cattle, and drive a straight-truck in those early years of marriage. She also taught herself to sew and made her children's clothing. Jean obtained her G.E.D. from Lincoln High School in Sioux Falls, SD, while working a full time job when she was in her 50's. She was passionate about staying fit and walked three miles every day until she was almost 80. She retired from working at the Valley Inn in Sioux Falls a month before her 80th birthday.

Jean was a loving, hard-working, wise, witty, independent, resilient, and feisty woman with a passion for her family. She also loved decorating her home, keeping up on current events, trees, democrats, and a few republicans who were related to her.

Blessed to have her example of courage, determination, and strength are her four daughters: Jeanne Runge of Sioux Falls, SD, Cathy Califf of Ankeny, IA, Linda Stevens of Boise, ID, and Sally Califf (Bill Braun) of Olympia, WA; her three grandchildren Lori Runge, Mike (Mary) Runge, and Sean (Kara) Califf; six great grandchildren Dustin (Val), Joe, Emily, Emma, Andi, and Sam, two sisters-in-law, and nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her five sisters, and her two brothers.

A service to honor Jean's life will be held on Saturday, December 5th, at 2:00 at Heritage Funeral Home in Sioux Falls, SD.
