Joseph Gillen

Joseph W. Gillen, 89, passed on April 3, 2016 at the Golden Living-Bella Vista in Rapid City.

Joseph was born on May 18, 1926 in Hartford, SD to John and Mary (McGuire) Gillen. He graduated from Hartford High School, and then joined the U.S. Army. He served during WWII and Korea. In 1948 he married the love of his life, Patricia Trople, in New Underwood, SD. The couple moved to Rapid City in 1960 and raised nine children.

Joseph worked as a clerk for the USPS for 29 years, retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Cathedral, Life member of VFW Post 1273, Moose Lodge 1137, and American Legion of Hartford Post 118.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia; nine children, Michael (Karla) Gillen of Rapid City, James Gillen of Piedmont, Steven Gillen of Rapid City, Susan Gillen of Albuquerque, NM, Nancy (Paul) Lindquist of Raleigh, NC, Daniel Gillen of Rapid City, Catherine Roccaro of Albuquerque, NM, Matthew Gillen of Black Hawk, and William (Velvet) Gillen of New Underwood; 15 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Louis and Leo.

Visitation will be held from 12:30-1:30pm on Thursday, April 7, with the funeral service starting at 1:30pm at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City. Burial will be held on Monday, April 11 at 1pm at Black Hills National Cemetery, near Sturgis.
