Sioux Falls - Karen Braaten, Sioux Falls, SD, died January 13, 2021, at Sanford ICU in Sioux Falls, SD, with family by her side. She was 79 years old.
Karen Marie Braaten was born August 13, 1941 in Wilmar, MN, to Clyde and Laberta Jones. She attended Garretson public school and graduated in 1959. Following high school, she attended Augustana College as a biology and chemistry major.
On February 3, 1964, she was united in marriage to Roger Braaten in Sioux City, Iowa. The couple moved to Sioux Falls, where she worked at Orthopedic Associates for over 30 years. During that time, she gave birth to a son Mark and twins, Jennie and Jon.
After she retired from Orthopedic Associates, she worked at the SD Lions Eye Bank. She was active in the Lions Club with Roger, even though she was not a member.
She was a lifetime member of the Jefferson PTA, a girl scout leader, a Lions Melvin Jones Award winner and was on the library board at First Lutheran Church, where she was a member for 57 years. She was a huge jeopardy fan and Denver Broncos fan, traveled the world, went to many rock concerts and was an avid reader. She loved to go on road trips with Roger and play the license plate game. She loved animals; especially dogs. She was in love with Scotland and even owned a small piece of land in the Highlands.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Roger; sons, Jon (Kim) Braaten, Lincoln, NE, Mark Braaten, Sioux Falls, SD; daughter, Jennie Braaten, Sioux Falls, SD; grandchildren, Tyler and Andrew; and sister, Donna Bailey, Sioux Falls, SD. She was proceeded in death by her parents and many beloved dogs.

Funeral Services will be held at 1pm Saturday, January 16, 2021, at First Lutheran Church, 327 S. Dakota Avenue. Visitation is from 5pm-7pm on Friday, January 15, 2021, with the family present to greet friends at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD.
