Larry Knudson, 66, of Ankeny, IA, formerly of Salem, SD passed away at Iowa Methodist Hospital on Tuesday, February 28, 2017. Funeral mass will begin at 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 4 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Salem. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm on Friday, March 3 with a 5:30 pm prayer service at Kinzley Funeral Home in Salem.

Larry Allen Knudson, son of Clarence and Florine (Sanders) Knudson was born in Madison, South Dakota on July 10, 1950. He grew up on a farm north of Salem. Larry attended school for his first two years in the Orland school. He then transferred with his family to the Salem school district where he finished out his grade and high school years. He graduated from Salem High School in 1968.

Larry was united in marriage to Karen Van Emmerik on February 20, 1971 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Salem, SD. They have two children, Adam and Angie.

He attended college at South Dakota State University in Brookings for three years and then the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis where he finished his degree, graduating in 1973 with a B. S. in Mortuary Science. He was employed by Mattson Funeral Home in Forest Lake, Minnesota. In 1976 he went to work at Klasse Funeral Home in Westbrook, Minnesota. He was there until 1978 when he moved back to his hometown of Salem to become a partner at Kinzley Funeral Home. After several years he also became a partner at Heritage Funeral Home in Sioux Falls. After 33 years of service in the funeral business he was forced to retire early because of an accident in June 2006 that left him a quadriplegic.

Larry was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Salem and more recently Our Lady's Immaculate Heart Catholic Church in Ankeny, IA. He was also a member of the South Dakota Funeral Directors Association, and served for 11 years on the Salem/McCook Central School Board.

In April 2015 they moved to Ankeny, IA to be near their daughter and her family.

Before his accident Larry enjoyed golf, hunting, handy man jobs around the house and traveling. He especially enjoyed helping on his friend Steve's farm at harvest time.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Karen of Ankeny, IA; two children, Adam (Mary Gabriel) Knudson, Falls Church, VA, Angie (Pat) Ferguson, Johnston, IA; four grandchildren Jonas, Owen, Leah and Sophie; his brother Don (Gloria) Knudson, Rosemount, MN; his sister Janet (Lynn) Stofferahn West Point, NE; three sisters-in-law, Carol Krcil, Mitchell, SD, Linda Malfait, Norfolk, NE; Joanne (Bob) Bellack, Sioux Falls, SD; one brother-in-law Dennis (Valdona ) Van Emmerik, Holt, MO and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Larry is preceded in death by his parents, a brother-in-law Churck Krcil, brother-in-law Tom Malfait and nephew Todd Van Emmerik.
