Obituary for Lee Michael (Mick) McCahren

Lee Michael (Mick) McCahren, son of Margaret Babcock McCahren and Lee Frank McCahren, was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on January 28, 1936, and died on September 16, 2016. He attended Mark Twain grade school, and graduated from Washington High School in 1953. He spent his first college year at Iowa State before transferring to the University of South Dakota, graduating in 1957. At USD he met Nancy Hoy of Vermillion, and they married September 26, 1959. While an undergrad at USD, Mick was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity and the Dakotans Honorary Society. They spent two years teaching in Illinois High schools before returning to graduate school at USD in 1961.

Mick earned an M.A. in Spanish in 1962, and a JD from the School of Law in 1965. Their son Lee Christopher, "Kit," was born in 1961 and their daughter Julie Blythe was born in 1965. The year following law school, the McCahren's moved to Aberdeen, where he served as a law clerk for federal judge Axel Beck, and was a member of the Law Review Board before returning to Vermillion.

Mick began his practice of law in 1966. During his years of active practice, he was involved in many local and state organizations: Vermillion city attorney, Rotary club president, USD and City organizations, and the Clay-Union County Bar Association. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge.

He also served 42 years on the S.D. Board of Minerals and Environment, and was the chief counsel for the S.D. Lottery when the state lottery was established. He was proud of his leadership role with the Friends of Bill. Highlights of his life were his frequent travels with grandson, Braiden. Paying tribute at the celebration of his life will be his nephew, Mark Mickelson, long-time friends, Dick Sweetman and Bob Frieberg, and son, Kit McCahren.

Mick was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Kay McKeon. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; children, Kit and Julie; grandson, Braiden; sister, Linda Mickelson Graham (Tom) and her children, Mark, Amy and David and their families; a cousin, Bonnie Rainey; a brother in law, George McKeon and children, Mike and Meg.

A service in celebration of Lee's life will be held at the Vermillion United Church of Christ Congregational on Tuesday, September 20 at 7:00 p.m.
