Lester "Les" Rumpza, 62, of Sioux Falls, retired police officer, passed away Sunday, August 28, 2016 after a courageous battle with renal cancer.

Family present visitation will be 5:00 - 7:00 pm Thursday, September 1, at Miller Funeral Home-Westside Chapel, 6200 W. 41st Street with a Liturgical Wake Service beginning at 7:00 pm.

Funeral Mass will be 1:00 pm Friday, September 2, at St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, 1800 S. Katie Ave. with interment at St. Michael Cemetery.

Lester Marion Rumpza, son of Jacob and Marie (Fleischhacker) Rumpza, was born February 8, 1954 in Watertown, SD. He grew up on the family farm near Waubay, SD and graduated from Waubay High School in 1972. He worked for Buskerud Construction for several years.

Les was united in marriage with Gwendolyn Deutsch on June 25, 1977 in Eden, SD. They moved to Sioux Falls in 1978 where he began working with Jordan Millwork. Les joined the Sioux Falls Police Department in 1988, where he worked Traffic Patrol and then as a Detective. He retired on January 22, 2014. He continued some security work with the City Council and the Crime Lab.

He was a member of St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, and the Fraternal Order of Police.

Les loved being with his family. They enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening, and was a good handyman and woodworker. He had really enjoyed his art of winemaking because it was opportunities to share with family and friends.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 39 years, Gwen; three children, Stefanie (Jeremy) Gill, Angie (Zach) Doohen, Leslie (Scott) Wilson; seven grandchildren, Skyla, Briella, Charlotte, Oakley, twins Hazel Marion and Elsie, and #1 grandson, Griffin; grandpuppy, Stavie, all of Sioux Falls, SD; six siblings, Dorothy (Al) Kost, Aberdeen, SD, Don (Betty) Rumpza, Waubay, SD, Diane (Bruce) Kjelden, Fargo, ND, Ed (Joanne) Rumpza, Princeton, IA, Marie "Tudy" Rudebusch, Watertown, SD, Doug (Kari) Rumpza, Fargo, ND; mother-in-law, JoAnn Deutsch, Roslyn, SD; five brother-in-laws, Bryan (Christine) Deutsch, Delano, MN, Tim (Sharon) Deutsch, Sioux Falls, SD, Mark Deutsch, Columbia Heights, MN, Perry (Linda) Deutsch, Aberdeen, SD, Troy (Terri) Deutsch, Sioux Falls, SD; sister-in-law, Natalie (Troy) Sattler, Roslyn, SD; and several nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Les was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob Rumpza and Marie Thompson; his father-in-law, Florenz Deutsch; and his son-in-law, Nate Janssen.
