Lois M. Ballard, 99, of Vermillion, SD passed away Friday, August 18 at the Sanford Vermillion Care Center.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, August 26 at the St. Agnes Catholic Church in Vermillion with a rosary prior to the service and burial to follow in the Calvary Cemetery in Vermillion. Visitation will be from 5-7 PM Friday August 25 with a prayer service at 7:00 PM all at the Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion.

Lois Dolan was born March 17, 1918 in Beresford, SD to Joseph and Nellie Henrich Dolan. "Top of the morning to you!" quipped the attending physician on that St. Patrick's Day. Lois graduated from Beresford High School and the University of South Dakota where she participated in theatrical productions. She enjoyed the variety of teaching first grade and later high school English in South Dakota schools.

George Ballard and Lois Dolan were united in marriage on December 30, 1946 at St. Teresa's Catholic Church in Beresford. They farmed near Vermillion and in 1970 they moved to Vermillion where George pursued real estate and Lois managed their apartments. They loved to travel the USA and also enjoyed entertaining at their "cozy hills" retreat which was great fun for them. They were blessed with 43 wonderful years together before George's death in 1990.

Inspired by her mother's oil paintings, Lois took instructions in acrylic painting and porcelain painting in the 70's, and painting became her hobby. Lois loved photography, capturing many family moments over the years. She compiled many photo albums for her family and nieces and nephews. She enjoyed card playing with friends and attending many sessions of "pitch" card games at the Vermillion Senior Center.

Lois was a member of the St. Agnes Catholic Church, the Resurrection Choir, Altar Society and the Catholic Daughters of America. She was also a member of the Merry Homemakers Extension Club, Vermillion Senior Citizens Center and the Vermillion Porcelain Artists Organizations.

She is survived by her two sons; Dr. Patrick (Susanne) Ballard of Eagan, MN, Dr. Dan (Mary) Ballard of Sioux Falls and a daughter Jeanne (Dr. Duane) Mehlhaf of Vermillion. Six grandchildren; Mike Ballard, Matt Ballard, Sarah Rust, Chris Hanson, Brian Hanson and Katherine Highland, and eight great grandchildren: Brynlee, Caleb, Margaret, Elijah, Clara, Cate, Caroline and Harper. Also surviving her is a sister Eileen O'Connor of Sioux Falls, SD and a sister-in-law Sally Dolan of Beresford.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George, four sisters; Florence Dolan, Marge Smit, Eunice Beacom and Virginia Thompson, a brother Robert Dolan and granddaughter Kristi Hanson.

In Lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the St. Agnes Catholic School or the Vermillion Senior Center.
