Brooksville - Marlene Buus Aeilts Thomas, 87, of Brooksville, Fl passed away Wednesday (September 5, 2018) at the Sturgill Hospice Care Center in Brooksville, Fl, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

Celebration of Life services will be held at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, September 22 at the American Legion Post 186, 12091 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville, FL. Chaplain Betty Lou Bennett will officiate. Marlene chose to be cremated and her ashes will be spread at a private location.

The Celebration of Life will be broadcast live on FACEBOOK on her personal page. Friends and family from around the world are invited to join the celebration via technology!

Marlene Muriel Buus was born, March 25, 1931 near Tea, S.D., a daughter of John J. (J.J.) and Muriel Purvis Buus. She graduated from Lennox High School in Lennox, SD and attended Dakota State (Teacher) College. She married Raymond Aeilts on November 30, 1951 in Tea, S.D. To this union were born five children. Mark, Michelle, Shelley, Kirk and Jay. Marlene and Ray were divorced in 1979. Marlene married Clayton Thomas, in May 2002, in Rock Rapids, IA. Marlene and Clay made their home in Highpoint Community, Brooksville, Florida. Marlene worked across many fields including education, business, medical and hospitality. She enjoyed traveling and was a life-long learner. She could spin a tale and cut a rug! Marlene loved people… and people loved her!

Surviving are a daughter, Shelley (Terry) Overman of Gibson City, IL ; son, Kirk (Cindy) Aeilts of Brooksville, Fl. son, Jay (Roxanne) Aeilts of Tea, SD, brother, Dwight (Margaret) Buus of Tea, SD, sister, Marilyn (Chris) Christensen of Vermillion, SD, step-son Gordon (Nancy) Thomas of Dunedin, FL and sisters-in-law, Jane Aeilts and Darlene Aeilts, both of Rock Rapids, IA. Also surviving are her much loved grandchildren, Toby (Amy) Aeilts, Mark Michael (Angela) Overman, Molly (Chad) Overman Augspurger, Sidney Overman, Chelsea Aeilts, Cody Aeilts, Tylor and Derek Harr, Austin Carlson, Erica (Dakota) Case, and Nick Aeilts as well as her lucky and adoring great-grandchildren, Kailyn Harris, Owen, Cole and Emma Gottsch, Nora and Oliver Aeilts, Beau Overman Augspurger, Armin Harr, and Ollie Braaten.

Marlene was a life-long member of the Lutheran faith and was ready for her Heavenly welcome. She looked forward to joining her parents, her husband Clay, her brother Darrell, and her beloved son Mark and infant daughter, Michelle as well as many friends and family who went before her.

Marlene had many friends in many places. Her wit and warmth solidified many special friendships. Marlene did not die from cancer… she lived with it- with a smile on her face and a song in her heart. In lieu of flowers and in honor of her spirit memorials may be made to the or the Brookville, Florida American Legion Post 186.
