Marlys Lorraine Kroon Obituary
Marlys Lorraine Kroon

Marlys Lorraine Kroon was born to eternal life on July 19, 2017 at home in West Bend, Wisconsin surrounded by her family. Beloved wife of Delmar for 58 years. Cherished mother of Kristie (Terry) Kurtenbach, Juliana Bjorklund, and Kara (Tom) Manuel. Beloved grandmother of Hannah, Khia, Amanda, Leo, Calvin, and Morgan. Daughter of the late Max and Mayona Day.

Marlys was born on July 8, 1939 in Lennox, South Dakota at the home of her grandparents. She graduated from Washington High School in 1957 and attended college at Gustavus Adolphus as well as Augustana College. She pursued a career in education beginning in 1962. Her favorite teaching job was at Whipple Elementary where she was responsible for music programs for all 8 grades. While raising her family she was also a rural route mail carrier, an account executive for Gorsuch Marketing and the store manager for Crossroads Book and Music.

Marlys' strong faith inspired her many volunteer endeavors. She directed the angel choir and taught the Golden Age Sunday School class at First Baptist Church. She and Del managed Mission Craft sales for 20 plus years to benefit mission efforts of First Baptist. She was a sought-after soloist for weddings, funerals, and conferences. She was an inspirational speaker for women's groups across the Midwest. She also led an early morning, non-denominational Bible study for 20 plus years. She joined Oak Hills Baptist Church in 2006 and was the leader of a Bible Study that met in her home.

Her interests extended into the community. She was a long-time member of Alta Petens study group. Marlys sang in the American Legion Chorus and was a member of the award winning American Legion Sextet. She was a member and Queen of the Daughters of the Nile, as well as an active member of Shrine Auxiliary. She was a 4-H club leader in Minnehaha County for 15 plus years. She was an active Questers member later in life and delighted in collecting unique aluminum pieces.

Marlys was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in her 40s which inspired her volunteer activities with the National MS Society. She counseled a newly diagnosed group, served as the MS 150 Bike Chair, and worked many MS walks. In addition, she served on a Sioux Falls Health Board committee that made recommendations to improve handicap accessibility in the city.

A celebration of life service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at Oak Hills Baptist Church, 6201 S. Lyncrest Ave, Sioux Falls. Family will be available at 9:00 am to greet and share memories. Lunch will follow at the church. Burial will follow for those who wish to accompany the family to Lennox, SD

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the National MS Society or the Scottish Rite Foundation to benefit the Del and Marlys Kroon Graduate Fellowship.
