Marvin Glen Nelson Obituary
Marvin Glen Nelson

Marvin Nelson, 100, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, January 23, 2017. He was surrounded by family.

Marvin Glen Nelson, son of Gullik and Mable (Olson) Nelson, was born on November 19, 1916 in Martin Township, Minnesota. After his birth mother's death in childbirth, he was raised by his father and mother Inga. He graduated from Hills High School before beginning his career in agriculture.

Marvin wed Doris McDowell on June 14, 1941, in Valley Springs, SD. The couple lived in South Dakota and Minnesota as they raised their family of three daughters and a son in homes that he built. After retirement in 1980, they lived in Sioux Falls during the spring and summer and wintered in Mission, TX.

Marvin was a quiet doer. He nurtured his children and others through support and leadership in 4-H, fishing, hunting, and membership on school boards and church councils. He and Doris loved to travel and spent time all over the world, including Europe, Scandinavia, Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii, Australia, Peru, and New Zealand. He was a faithful member of First Lutheran Church, the Norse Glee Club, and Kiwanis. They enjoyed golf and cards with numerous friends.

Grateful for having shared his life are his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, including daughters Kristi Jo Nelson (Sioux Falls, SD); Deanna Jean Nelson (Cary, NC); son Glenn Eugene Nelson and his wife Josephine (Pipestone, MN); grandchildren Joel Jacobson and wife Melissa (Aurora, CO); Nathan Zimmerman and wife Teri (Chicago, IL); Heather Nill and husband Bryan (Whitefish Bay, WI); step-grandchildren Jeff Feucht; Perry Feucht and wife Jewel; Janine Bassett and husband EJ; Pam Woelber and husband Troy; Craig Feucht; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Marvin was preceded in death by his loving wife, Doris; his parents, his daughter Judith Jacobson, and his brothers and sisters.

The family requests that memorials be directed to First Lutheran Church Media Ministry.

Visitation will take place at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Ave., Sioux Falls, from noon until 6 pm on Thursday, January 26, 2017, and the family will greet friends and relatives from 4 until 6 pm on that date. His funeral will be held at First Lutheran Church, 327 S. Dakota Ave., at 11 am on Friday, January 27, 2017, with burial at Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery in Hills, MN.
